My 1993 ford f250 was showing high on the NO (ppm) though not by much. Is there a way to work this out with out spending a lot of moey. I am selling the truck. It only has 115,000 miles on it and is mechanicaly sound. Someone mentioned putting alcohol in the tank along with the gas just before I go to have it smoged. Thanks for the help
Thanks for the 2cents Bill. I am new to this site so not suprised that I did something wrong as far as posting in the wrong place. The truck is a 1993 Ford f250 with a 351 motor. They (smog shop) told me that it was the cat. Can you tell me how to clean the injectors? Or do you have another 2cents about possible cause and cure. Thanks
I doubt that I can be much help. Get a second opinion from another shop. Could be a CAT, but at 115k that would be an early failure. Even so, an exhaust shop can put an A/M unit in for reasonable money. That's probably not something you want a smog check shop to do.
As for cleaning injectors, you can try some Seafoam, which can work pretty fast, or you can run some Techron through a few tanks of gas, but that takes a while. In the long run, I like the Techron better, if time permits.
You can scroll down the forum list to where your MOTOR is listed. Might be better opinions there than in a general truck forum.
my 94' f250 w/ the 351 would not pass emissions a couple years ago, with only 98k miles. it turned out the 3 way cat was dead. the nox were high (just over the limit) the co and hc were very low. i used to work on vehicles for a living so before i bought it to the local ford dealer i checked all obvious things related to high nox emissions ( nox emissions are created by high combustion temps) i checked the egr system which reduces combustion temps under load, was ok, engine was not running to hot, and figured the air/fuel ratio was ok because of the low co and hc, a lean running engine will have hotter combustion temps creating higher nox and usually high hc as well. i also checked o2 sensor readings with a scan tool, it showed a good switching rate which indicates the air/fuel ratio is being controlled by the pcm.
well the ford dealer called me and told me the cat was no good and wanted close to 1000$ for a new ford one, i asked them to get a walker direct fit for a fraction of the cost and it passed the emissions test with low readings, i think the walker was around 300$, also identical to the oem ford cat that was removed ( i belive walker is a oem supplier if my memory serves me right) i live in massachusetts and my old 94' no longer needs emissions as of this year, go figure
