bdrummonds, what pressure are you running in those tires? I have 285 D rated tires on my F350 CC SRW and hate them because of how much the sidewalls flex up front. I'm running 60psi up front. All E rated tires I've seen on trucks exactly like mine don't flex or bulge out like mine. E rated / 10 plys seem to work better. I really have to buy new tires here within the next month or so and will be buying 265's E rated.

I'm running 265 Es in Good Year Silent Armor flavor. I like them so far, but they weren't that cheap. About $800 & change out the door. Believe it or not, the dealership had the best price!
Here is a link for cooper tires. What's nice about this link is that in the lower right hand corner is a link for tire specifications. It lists the tire sizes available, overall height and width, rating, recommended rim widths, and even the tread depth. I run cooper ATR's on both trucks. Cooper makes a lot of different tires. Check out the different types of tires they sell. As you check out the different tires, they have a rating system there also for traction in mud, snow, wet, or dry. Also the noise level.

I just got a quote today from our local Firestone dealer. He recommended the 235/85/16 Firestone Transforce H/T for highway all 6 tires on the truck for $1063 ant the A/T a more aggresive design for $1219 on the truck. I ask about warranty and that is road hazard but there is no mileage warranty. I do see a lot of these tire on trucks around here. Does any one here run these? I would like to put some bigger tires on also since I will be putting out over a grand any way.

I have been running Transforce AT's (265/ 70/ r16's) on my 2WD, SRW since switching from the Michelin's about 3 years ago. They were similar in price at the time I switched, have lasted twice as long and ride nicer....... in my HUMBLE opinion.
I'm glad I read this thread because I am ready for a new set and wanted to switch up a size, so will go with the 285's this time but will DEFINITELY shop the Firestone Transforce's again. Mostly hard top for me when I switched (had 2 Mich rear and 2 F/stones up front fer a while) and they seem to do well on the hard/ sand and gravel roads where I live now also.
Hope this helps,

I also went with the 285/75-16 on mine. The tire is a little taller and I do like the way it looks, but I kind of regret doing that because it affects the final gear ratio and I can tell a difference when pulling. But not bad enough to buy a new set of tires I guess.

I'm in the same exact boat as Keith. Just put on 285s, they look cool, but with 3.73 gears, I noticed more dropping out of OD, and even possibly more sluggish acceleration. I got Firestone Destination A/T 285/75/16. They're alright, I guess. I got a decent deal.
Sorry, mine should've read 265/ 75/ 16's, NOT 256/ 70.

I ran Uniroyal Liberators in 285/75R16 and they lasted just over 60,000 miles. They were quiet on the highway, were rated for 3400lbs each (D load rating), had good traction (though I'd sipe ANY tire that didn't come that way) and cost under $700 mounted, balanced, ... TOTAL. Get 'em at Wal-Mart.
I'm running the same tire as Brendon,a little over $600., D-rated,285's,they're really a beefy looking tire compared to the 265's.

I have a new set of these on my 1/2 ton Chevy 4X4 and they are great on it. I have had 2 sets on it before and get about 60,000 each but I am just alittle hesitant on putting them on a dually being a D rated and I haul. If I had a F250 and didn't haul alot thats what I would get.

I'm running 285/75/16's Michelin LTX AT2's, really liking this tire. Just put 2400 miles on them with a trip to Illinois and back to Maine. I have mud flaps on my truck and they do rub, not bad but definitely hear them at full turn. Got my Michelin's at Sams Club last month with a $70 instant rebate. Equates to $210 a tire.

the reason you are seeing the "sidewall flex" is because you now have an 11.5" wide tire on a 7" wide rim. I doesn't matter whether you are running an 8 ply D rated or a 10 ply E rated you will still see the same sidewall deflection. Now if we moved up to a 10" wide rim then we would both see much less deflection. To bring this into perspective, stock 265 tires are 31x10.5x16 on a 7" wide wheel. 10.5"-7"= 3.5". Now 3.5"/2= 1.75" of overhang per side of the wheel. An 11.5" wide tire)285/75/16 would provide 2.25 inches of overhang, and a 12.5" wide tire(305/70/16) will provide 2.75" of overhang, so of course we're going to have more sidewall deflection. DISCLAIMER: the above figures are for representative purposes only. Manufactures measure their respective tires differently, but the above numbers are close enough for discussions sake.
If it makes any difference I am running 65PSI of Nitrogen in my tires. Air is good, but the oxygen molecules are actually small enough to seep through the pores in the rubber of your tires, thus the reason you have to check and adjust your pressure every few thousand miles. Nitrogen is a larger molecule and is to big to seep though the pores of the rubber. I had Nitrogen put in my tires when the were new, and over two years have not lost any pressure. I have my tires rotated, balanced, and the pressure checked every 5k miles.

I replaced the rears this year with Michelin LTX M/S, 235 85/16 E's, planning to do the same for the front this winter but will increase the width to 285's by 85/16 E's for the look.
Question- your talking sidewall flex due to the narrow rim and wider tire. Flex=heat, Could this be a possible issue with 2900 lbs on the pin, flying down the hard stuff in the truck's sweet spot?

That makes sense. I'm going back to the stock size 10 ply E rating tire. I don't like the sidewall bulge or flex. The rear tires don't bulge, only the fronts. It's odd looking and I think the truck's ride feels slushy compared to the same truck running 10 ply 265's.

It could, but in my experience (11.5K 5er) towed all over the Southeast US in 95* to 100+* temps, it has not ever presented a problem. My theory is that with the larger area of sidewall and tread that is contacted with the flow of air around the tires is that the heat that may have been caused by the flex is cooled. i may be wrong but it makes sense in my head.....
