Gas in Oil?

Help please! I have a 1979 E250 with a 351W in it that has been giving me trouble lately. I'd love to get it going better by taking it to a mechanic but I'm unfortunately VERY short on money at the moment and currently living in the van also. It's an ugly situation but I'm gonna keep trying to make it. Anyway, back to the problem.

I work part-time now about 6 miles from the homeless shelter in Cheyenne, WY and have been driving the van back and forth. One day last week I got to work early and checked the oil. The oil looked a little bit like coffee with creamer in it. There were a few "bubbles" on the dipstick too. I rubbed the oil with my fingers and smelled it and it smelled pretty strongly of gasoline. I immediately was thinking that my head gaskets blew or some other terrible thing. I have driven the van about 20 miles since then and I've been checking the oil obsessively also. The color of the oil when the van has been off and the engine cool is a regular dark oil color, a bit dirty, but regular. If I get the van up to operating temperature and drive to work then the oil appears to be a lighter color that resembles the coffe with creamer. The oil still smells of gasoline even when cool.

I'm trying to think of all the things I can write about the van and it's problems that will give you the best idea of it's problems. I'm at the public library and I won't be able to check the replies to this post until tomorrow afternoon.

There was a little tick I had on the right side of the motor that I thought was under the valve cover so I took the cover off and checked things out visually. I didn't know what I was looking for really so that didn't help but I started running a straight weight oil then. 30 weight I've been using and the motor goes through about a quart of it every three weeks or so. I haven't changed the oil since this problem but I will on Friday when I get paid. Thanks for the help in advance, my time on the computer is almost up.

Your carb is dumping way too much fuel into the motor, I suggest you remove the carb and clean it out, check that the floats actually still float, they should be sealed with no fluid inside, and that the float jet isn't stuck or obstructed.

airharley is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
If you have a mechanical fuel pump check that first. It is possible for the diaphram to have a hole in it and it is leaking through the timing cover fuel pump mount.
