Junk Yard price?

Hi you seasoned junk yard junkies. I need a wiper arm for my f250 and went to a local junk yard yesterday to pick one up. I walked out into the yard and grabbed one, but when I went to pay for it the guy wanted $20. I told him to keep it. I thought that price was waaaay too high seeing that I can buy one new at advance auto for $26. I then called another yard and they wanted $15.75. I was expecting between $5-$10. Am I totally crazy or just too cheap??

What would you guys expect to pay for this wiper arm?

Thanks.

make friends with the junkyard. they're flexible on their prices. its like a flea market, haggling over the prices is acceptable, and normally expected. offer him scrap metal price for it. know what the going rate for scrap is. junkyards are normally best when you go in prepared. and go often. i've found taking donuts first thing when they open on saturday will buy you all sorts of friends, turn all sorts of eyes blind, and drop prices drastically. just my .02

Just called two other yards, cheapest was $5 (I pull) and the other was $10. I guess I'm not crazy after all.

Thanks for the feedback

Wish it was that way around by me. The junkyard guys know me by name but that doesnt mean they will move their prices at all for me.

I have never tried the donut idea before, but I agree, befriend the guys there - One of my favorite ones, they know me by name, and I crack jokes with them or B.S. with them all the time. They are very kind on their pricing. Another franchise one I go to has set prices. The guys see you enough and and get to know you. Sometimes a part gets listed as a cheaper part, or they just wave it off. Treat them nicely, and they will do the same.

As for the arm - absolutely $20 was too much!

I have 3 Pull A Parts in close proximity of my house. $1 to get in, and prices are great.
Pull-A-Part has prices listed.
