Okay I just bought a 97 f250 7.3 im noticing that the turbo is not whistling like my 95 dodge did. Why is this I recently had a fuel issue underneath the turbo which i got it takin care of but when I get on it I dont hear the turbo whistling and I dont even see smoke coming from the exhaust. What can I do to see if the turbo is working correctly the dealership gave me a 30 day warranty on the truck and yes they have fixed everything I have found wrong with it. But this turbo has got me baffled and dont know what to try next. Help
your in the wrong forum, you need the first gen powerstroke forum.but i can tell you the 1st gen's dont whistle much without a straight pipe and a cold air intake.and with no black smoke that means the turbo is working fine

Ok You need to open up the intake and add a down pipe if the cat is still there delete it if is ok in your state then u can hear the turbo whistle. Mine whistles at 2200 rpm and up. And the smodke thing is because dodge has injection pumps we have heui systems which is electrohydraulic injectors. You can make the engine smoke with a custom chip like tony wildman. I hope I helped.

rodneywar: I have a bit of smoke on my truck in the mid to upper rpms. Seems to be the worst in first and second, which is accompanied with a miss. Where do I start with diagnosing this? 1997 f350 5spd 4x4
for the smoke and whistle question by the OP. if you want smoke you need fuel. your dodge probably didn't have the baffle in the turbo that came with it. when you take the baffle outta a dodge turbo the scream at you, but we don't have those. so you need to do the intake. for that go with the 6637 intake. you may be able to type in 6637 mod in the search and find a lot of pics, but in the mean time i will try to get a pic of mine. that intake only costs around $50 to build. then you need to do the exhaust. i would go with 3" downpipe to 4" exhaust with or without a muffler and no cat. then you should do guages and then the chip. for the chip if you want smoke look at tony wildman @ www.totaldieselperformance.com or Jody's tunes at DP-Tuner
Ok i found your post on the other thread I would say one of your injector o rings is giving out under high pressure from the hpop letting oil into the cylinder that could account for the smoke also it accounts for the miss cause the injector isnt getting the oil pressure it needs due to the oil going into the cylinder causing a miss. I hope some one else will verify my theory cause i don't have the actual engine in my hands.

I have been eyeing the DIY injector rebuild kits and am not fond of throwing money at a machine without a plan. It doesn't really shake or shudder until you get into the throttle but the problem seems to go away once its in third gear. Seems to have something to do with the rate of rpm change. dunno. I found that the exhaust manifolds and some of the pre turbine pipes weren't tight. After tightening all that up the engine makes a swooshing noise as the turbo comes up to pressure. Not sure that is normal so I will check for pressure leaks tomorrow, unless it is normal. Turbo gas is a little different than turbo diesel...

Reason: previous expirence with a sports car.... truck is diesel
On my 97 I could never hear the turbo. Then I did the 6637 intake and a 3-4 inch downpipe with a 4" straight pipe exiting in front of the rear tire. It whistles loud at an idle and louder when you get on it. I love it. No other mods either(yet).

fordman is right on the ball. Those are the first 2 mods I did and had lots of whistle. better throttle response as well. The FPR (fuel pressure regulator) shim is another real cheap, real good mod. If you can afford to buy a BB, you can do this one.
