transmision question

i have been posting alot of odd ball questions bout my truck i know but im jus curious on a few things. on my tranny i got the 4r100. its a 4 speed right? so it should shift 1....2......3.....4......od right or should it go 1.....2.....3.....od. the reason for asking is normally driving it goes 1....2......3......od from 3 to od skipping what i think is 4th and goes stright to od from 3rd at like 40 to 45mph. when i pull or tow it dose the same only sometimes taking off up hill or accelerating hard will go 1...2.....3.....4.....od. this is all with the od on. when not towing with the od off 1....2....3....and at 55 or 60mph i hit 4th then can turn od on. i dont know if all that makes sense but am curious as to if thats normal or not.

agg_bagg is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
it is only a 4 speed so you what you are feeling is it shifting 1-2-3-4 then instead of OD it is the torque converter locking up. 4th is technically OD. sometimes the torque converter will lock up sooner than it does always that's why it only feels like you are only shifting 4 times. sometimes with my truck when it shifts from 3 to 4th the converter locks almost immediately and it is hard to tell the difference.

thanks jeron yea it had concerned me for a while and thought id ask if it was norm or not i got an edge evolution and i can custom tune it and when i adjust 3to4th i can do -3 or +5 .....- beeing quick and + beeing late. i messed with it and at -3 i hit od at like 35 or 40 and +2 od at 40mph. hadent gone any higher i wonder if i were to do a later shift pt from 3 to 4 if the tc would kick in earler like at 45mph and od at like 50 idk just foolin arround with it trying to get opnions

It actually should go 1, 2, 3, Lockup, 4. The lockup can make you feel like there is another gear. IMO the problem with stock shifting, is it does from lockup in 3rd to OD (4th) too fast, and the rpms drop way, way too much. Making the use of 3rd locked up, non existant, because it almost immediately shifts into 4th. Jody's 80tow shifts wonderfull. It is better then I could ask for it to be. And very predictable, and follows my foot and mind. You can actually use 3rd, locked up, under light acceleration, without having to lockout OD. (4th)
