Driver side mirror snafu, need advice

Well I backed out of my parents garage and hung the driver side mirror of the 99 on the center post. To my defense, my own garage doesn't have the post, just one big garage door. Theirs has two doors with the post in the middle. Ok, enough excuses...

The mirror folded back against the fender but didn't break off. The glass didn't break, either. BUT the plastic ball pivot behind the glass DID break. Didn't realize this until i hit a hard bump about 3 weeks after actually hanging the mirror on the garage.

So what I did was remove the glass and unplug the signal wire to save the glass from falling out while driving. This is where my question comes in:

Does anyone have experience with rebuilding the guts of the mirror by removing the plate with the power mirror motor? It looks like i can remove 3 screw, unplug the power mirror wires and transplant another plate with the motor and ball pivot. Or, would you recommend just buying a complete mirror.

Also, the signal wire is not attached to the plate i mentioned. So could I just buy and non heated power mirror and transplant my signal glass into the body and replace the back cover with my white one?

Anyone with previous experience dealing with mirror replacement please chime in. Much appreciated

I would replace the entire mirror only because there could be other cracks or damage that are too small to see. A little time in the weather and you could be right back to trying to repair it again.

As far as buying a non-signal or non-heated one and swapping the glass over, I don't see why that wouldn't work. The guts should be the same. It'll only cost about $30 instead of $120 that way.

A guy went speeding by my wife and smacked ours with his a few months back. He started to slow down and as soon as he saw my wife's reverse lights come on.. he took off.

On mine, the inside is good but the glass is shattered and the colored "cover" is cracked.

The whole assembly (heated with memory, and signal light) costs frickin $548 + tax here in Canada.. just for the part!

Robbery.
