Exclamation Starts.....runs.....but dont go anywhere!!!

Alright.....so I was merging onto the highway, and I had to get moving so I wouldn't get run over, and (not beating the hell outta it) but gave it a little and all I heard was a snap and that was it. The RPM's went way up and it was like a motorcycle without a chain.

What are the possible issues that we have going on here. Right now its sitting at Ford....and I'm awaiting the bad news....but to ease my mind a little.....is it possible its just the transfer case? I tried 4x4 (thinking it was the rear diff) but it doesn't spin the driveshaft(s). I don't hear any grinding or cruching when I run through the gears. I tried everthing to get this truck to move JUST AN INCH....but it wouldn't do it. Low range, 4x4, 4x4 low range, 2wd high, nothing but gravity will move it. Appreciate all the input!

Thanks!!

A very sad ~Tim

If it is "just the shaft" the tranny has to come out. Well really it will have to come out anyway. Depends on where its broke if you have to go inside the tranny, but most likely you will. If its broke at the torque converter then just buy a new shaft and TC and let er roll. Of course all of this is just speculation at this point. You can get a billet input shaft for about $275 so one from ford should be much cheaper. Whatever it is make sure that they show it to you and let us know what they find. You have several different options.

I'm looking at diagrams now....and it all seems to fit. Makes sence. I tried 1st gear.....nothing.....and 2nd and nothing same for reverse. Nothing was leaking. If it is that is the case.....what are the chances of the shaft just breaking and not harming anything else in the tranny?

Chances? Well, it really depends on where it broke, if that infact is what happened.
The pump could have lost pressure also, there are several different things that could have happened. If you let them tear into it take your camera with you and get some pics of the broken parts and post them up. You may not need a complete rebuild but depending on the damage or the miles on this one you may want to consider it or replacing it. BTS or John Wood are some good options but pricey and you wouldnt ever have to worry about it again.

I would get it out of that stealership before they hit you with a big bill, take it to a good tranny shop they will save you alot of money and build you a better tranny... or call BTS up

I'd put my money on the stator inside the torque converter. I had the exact same thing happen to myself last year. Merging and snap. It ended up being the stator.
Sorry about your luck. Keep us posted.

Alright....heres what happend. The input shaft snapped.....when that snapped....it wedged itself sideways and broke a few of the gears. They drained the fluid as I was there and hunks of metal just fell out. It was nasty. I wanted to catch them as they had it apart, but didn't get there in time. Had camera in hand to record the carnage. but I got to peek at the shaft and it was huge failure. I have a tranny out of a F-350 going into it......its a remanufactured.....so I got a 5 year/100,000 mile warrany with it. Getting it back tomorrow.....total repair cost is over $4000 however im working through the dealership, knocked it down to $2700, and they are covering half which all I'm paying is $1350 (roughly) I got lucky this time . The smaller piece is what he showed me.....he couldn't get the other one out....sorry its a bad picture....i took it with my phone.

Ive considered it, however shipping would also kill me too. I didnt want to be too peticular since the dealership was leveling with me. Next time....if there is a next time, I will definitely consider it more.... Thanks for the help!

The shipping is the reason I didn't go with a BTS and I didnt have anything to drive to go pick it up
Today a BTS shipped would be half the value of my truck.I would be money saved to scrap the truck and start over
