e-Brake engaging when backing up- Help!

99 F-150 4.6 manual, stretch cab, LWB 2 wheel drive with 4 wheel disc. For the last couple of months sometimes when I back up for a distance (distance varies) I hear a load clunck sound and the truck wants to stop. I have to give it gas to move it even down hill in nuetral it won't roll backwards- just creaks like the brake is engaged even though the pedal is fully up. When I go forward there is no clunking sound like it's resetting itself nor does it feel like the brake is engaged anylonger. So the question is what the heck could be going on?

Thanks, Dan

it could just be adjusted too tight. backing up can make them "grab". best to remove the wheel and disc and look to see that all is together and working. could just be "stuck" in one position. forward and backward operation are not the same, it can stick easier in reverse.

My buddy had a similar issue. The backing plate for the parking brake shoe assembly rotted out causing the attaching hardware to come loose resulting in knocking noises and parking brake binding.

Thanks guys, I'll stick my head under there and check the backing plates first, then go into it to see what I can see.

Sometimes the friction material on the parking brake shoes comes apart.

What the previous 2 said. The pads have a tendency of breaking free of the pad, generally though people just drive them untill the shoe grinds up. Most dont even ever notice they are gone, since it seems most people dont use the parking break on an automatic.

I dont use mine, i actually removed all the hardware for the parking brake.
