converting the block

I have '78 300 with the dip stick just above the motor mount. I am in the process of a rebuild, but the new block has the dip stick in the pan. I would like to convert this block and put the dipstick back by the mount. It looks like the factory just put a plug in the hole.

Does anyone have experience with this? Does it need to be drilled?

I have done it they other way around. Plugged the dip stick hole begind the motor mount and put the one in the oil pan on mine.

I suppose you could you would have to be carefully if you have to drill the hole for the tube. It is kinda like a press fit.

dip stick location

I'm wondering if the factory plug, at the motor mount location, can be tapped out from inside the block?

I'd love to hear from someone regarding this.

I checked the book for the block numbers of the one I pulled to replace my current '78 engine. The one I pulled was from a 75 van. According to the book, the same numbers of blocks could have either the dipstick just above the driver side motor mount, or in the oil pan.

However, they are, as I found out, interchangable. If the stick is in the pan, the factory just put a little plug in the motor mount hole, which is easily tapped out with a punch and hammer.
