rust in fuel

My drain water light keeps coming on and when I get down there to drain it rust is in my fuel. I think maybe this is what is setting it off. I just put the upgraded drain plug in. When I took the crappy factory one out it was rusted also. Is this where the rust was coming from? If so will it clear up or am I going to have too buy new filters now?

The FIRST thing I would do is change the filters!! But you also MUST find out where the "rust" is coming from. I thought we had plastic tanks so I haven't a clue where/why you have rust.

If the fuel tank is from factory, the diesel tank has to be rust resistant.

That is, made of aluminum coated steel (factory), or if it is an aftermarket, either stainless steel or some non-rusting material.

If you have a lot of rust... the first thing to do is to check it is a real factory tank, then the order of suspects are:

- got a bad tank of fuel from somewhere.... loaded with rust

- the coating has been breached (can only tell by visually inspecting an empty tank with a camera

- in any case, drain, replace the fuel filter, and purge the tank clean first.

Then go after your suspects.

Certain models were equipped w/ steel tanks and Ford issued Broadcast messages about them rusting. Others had plastic tanks installed.

What year, model, etc is your truck.

Also - where do you buy your fuel.

Don't let your filters go too long before changing as BPofMD said. Your injectors could be damaged.

It is a 07' with 44,0000 miles. The filters probably don't have but 7,000 on them.We have set monthly records here for rain fall every week . 18" just last week . Maybe it is coming from the underground tanks at the station. If they keep there rust will they drop this outrageous price of $2.72 or is that included with the price?

05 S.D.'s have a polyethylene tank and therefore can't rust. I would assume that yours is a plastic type tank also and you probably got a bad load of fuel.

are you sure its rust and not red clay? I had bad fuel twice that was loaded with water and red clay. change the filters, you dont want to be stuck on the side of the road because of a plugged filter. I think it is easier and way safer to change them where and when you want, not on the side of a highway, in the rain, with your favorite shirt on.LOL

Injectors will be damaged quickly if the fuel pressure drops below 45 psig.

Bismic,

Do you know where I could find out about models that experienced rusting issues with the steel tanks?

Thanks

the filler neck is steel even on the poly tanks on the 250/350's. on my 05 the neck was rusted so bad it was flaking off in chunks. That was in Feb 07 when i bought it, so it is def another source to consider and inspect.

I have it somewhere - I will look for it. I was thinking it was mainly chassis trucks, but not sure.
