I'm new to the forum have a 2009 w. AWD - do you have AWD with the 5spd? If so, VERY COOL! I looked for an earlier unit (maybe 2005 to 2008) with manual trans and AWD. I could not find one. Somewhere along the line they must have dropped it.

it has a switch for the 4wd. says "auto" and "on". manual says fwd until slip is detected in auto. turn on 4wd in heavy snow only.

Our 2002 manual explained the Auto vs On for 4wd as always taking off from a stop in 4wd, then slowly transitioning to FWD IIRC by 25mph, and then engaging as slip is detected.

Word of caution, because of the auto engaging, I would never keep two balding tires on the rear in the rain. Caught me by surprise once, slipped a bit in the front, threw power to the rear and whooeeee.
