Ok, My problem first arrived by my turning the key and it cranking. Then I turned the key bank and low and behold it was trying to start on its own in the off position. I took the key out......the starter is still trying to start truck. Ran battery down and starter was fried so i replaced it. Got everythign hooked back up and I go to start and glow plugs light but when its time for the starter to kick in I get nothing, like before i replaced the starter.
A little history, about 7 months ago I pulled up to a buddies shop and went to turn ignition off and truck kept running. Took key out and it kept running. My buddy came out and messed with something by the steering column and it turned off and worked fine. Could it be the same problem? Belive he said he pushed something in. What is it and what do I do to try it?
The ignition switch, the electrical part is on top of the steering column under the dash.
There is a pot metal rod that runs down from the key switch to the ignition switch to operate it.
And it is rather common for that pot metal rod to break.
What year is your truck and do you have a tilt wheel?

The ign/start switch should be, as Dave S says, bolted to the steering column under the dash. It is held on by two bolts and connected back to the key switch by a rod and the ign switch actuator.
To remove the ign/start switch you may have to drop the column a couple of inches.
