Question Need new engine for my '84 F150 (302-2v)

The 302 in my '84 F-150 needs a complete rebuild or replacement. For many months it has had a rod knock when cold (thanks to my ex's daughter running it low on oil until it started clattering and wouldn't even turn over on the starter until it cooled. Surprisingly the rings survived so I had a new oil pump put in and kept on driving it). But now it's got no oil pressure on the gauge when hot and yesterday a lifter started ticking. End of the road

I have never been happy with the anemic torque of the 302 and the 3-speed automatic. And with no overdrive the highway revs and mileage are quite annoying.

So - I am thinking about putting some other engine/trans in it. Maybe a 300 six with a five-speed? Or a stroked 302 with an OD automatic?

I'm a Moparite from way back (have been stuffing big-blocks and 4-speeds into Dart/Valiants for a long time) but have no idea what bolts up to what in the Ford engine/trans/bellhousing arena. Should I post this in Engine Swap also?

thanks for any tips.
-Charles

A 351-W is a bolt in swap. Bell housing bolt pattern is the same. All your brackets/pulleys on the front of the engine should hook up. You will have to re-work your exhaust though, because the 351 is a little taller/wider than the 302.

I'll second the 351W, it's a good engine. For a transmission, though, search this forum
& google on the ZF 5-speed, see whatchya think....

If you want to get rid of the tranny, you can put anything from a v6 to a 460 in it. The AOD is your only automatic overdrive option and only works with the 300/302/351w engines, unless you want to add a computer with a E4OD.

You will have to look at the 87-up trucks for a heavy duty zf 5 speed, and also there was the M5OD, a lighter duty 5 speed overdrive. I don't know when the started using the M5OD.

OK, thanks for the info! But if I go to my local junkyards and ask for a 351W + AOD they will probably look at me like I had two heads... or would the average yard guy know what that means? Should I just look at late 80's trucks until I see one with the right drivetrain?
thanks

In my recent experience, this stuff is gettin' harder & harder to find in the junkyards,
you might also check http://www.craigslist.org/ in your area.

I am not positive you will find a AOD behind a 351w. Someone may know, but the 351w may be taking the AOD to the limit. Not to say it wouldn't live behind a mild 351w with no heavy towing in mind.

I don't think you will find a 351W/AOD combo. You will find an 351W/ZF combo in F250 and up trucks.

If you go AOD, you need to target an '88-'93 unit, preferably from a V8 truck. V8 car OK. You may consider beefing it up, depending on your load and driving situation. These are tricky, as they use a throttle valve set up that is critical in it's adjustment.

The AOD will bolt to the 351W, but I do not know what flex plate to tell you to use.

If you found a squealin' deal on a 351W with an electronic trans, you can get stand alone controllers. Not cheap, but the electronics (specifically the E4OD) are significantly stronger (and bigger) than the AOD.

You will find 302/AOD combos, which might be a much cheaper way to go. If you can convert to stick, the 302/Mazda 5 speed would be good too. That's a bit of work though, requires the pedals and juice clutch set up.

An '84....solid and worth the money this is going to cost? Or could you shop around and part this one out and come out better?

I have a 1985 F150 with a 302 and a stock AOD. I see that you mentioned to target an '88-'93 unit. Why is that? Is my stock (rebuilt) 1985 AOD flawed in some way?

actually I would prefer a stick anyway... just have to add the pedals and make a shifter hole in the floor... also I expect to have to change the driveshaft.

Or is this not a bolt-in swap?

The truck is very rusty in the rear fenders and the tailgate is starting to go also... parting it out would not get me much more than scrap value I suspect. But it's paid for... if I buy another old truck I am inheriting someone else's problems, too!
