New F150 Owner Oil Change Question..

Awesome truck!!! I just purchased a 2005 Screw 5.4L Lariat with 19K miles on it and I would like to get your thoughts about oil changes. There's a Jiffy Lube close to my work that I have always used. I was thinking about using their synthetic blend on 3000 mile intervals. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Tim

Don't trust the flunkies at Jiffy Lube personally. Besides, I can get motorcraft syn blend and a motorcraft filter cheaper and do it myself.

Im sure there will be "reprisals" concerning my statement...but here goes.
If you plan to change the oil at every 3000 miles(as I do) then synthetic is a waste of money.Use a good quality regular oil,and Motocraft filters.Change it every 3000 with a new filter, and youll be set.
Ive just purchased an 07 4.2 with automatic tranny...The dealership did an oil change before it hit the lot,and ive still got around 1000 miles to go before its due.
I too had some questions concerning Synthetic vs regular oil,but in doin the research,Ill be spending a buttload of money for Synthetic oil and STILL changing it out every 3000.
Trust your truck to one person...Yourself.

BTW...Welcome to the forum!

Welcome to FTE! Take a look at your owner's manual. It will tell you the appropriate oil change intervals for the type of driving you do.

If your dead set on 3000 mile oil changes then use a conventional or semi syn oil such as Motorcraft. Full synthrtic oils are designed to go 7500-15000 miles depending on manufacturer. Always use a high quality oil filter such as MC, purolator, napa.

I use the semi-synthetic and a mc filter every 5000 miles as stated in the owners manual for "normal" driving (vs sevear duty).

I sat outside of a " Superduper Lube Expressmart" type place once, I had to take in a company truck, fleet deal we had on oilchanges, anyway.....I watched a young guy clear as day take the nice new filter and set it, o-ring side down, on the Dirty grime infested drive-on lift ramp and then install it dirt and all onto some guys nice new looking truck. I told the manager and we stopped going there. I'd never pay Anybody to change my oil. dealership included. have you seen the 18 year old "techs" that do the oil changes? I mean no offense to the many great mechanics that I'm sure do a standup job everytime.

The qualified mechanics don't do the oil changes. Even at the dealer. It is always an "apprentice".

I do 5K miles with MC oil and MC filter.

I still do some mechanical work on my trucks, but I stopped doing the oil changes or anything with fluids. I go to Ford or my other regular mechanic who is excellent. Regular oil every 3000 mi. and either a MC oil and filter or Napa Gold filter and Mobil1. I never have any problems with anything. I wouldn't be spooked from going to the dealer, just find a good one.

Save yourself a LOT of hell down the road (and $1000). I went there and they used a cheap aftermarket filter. less that 1000 miles later its in the shop with major engine problems. Not to get to technical, but unless you use the right filter (motocraft, wix to name a few) you will go through the same hell as I did.

3000-mile changes for any oil (Synthetic or otherwise) is a waste of money.

I run Mobile 1 long life synthetic in my truck and I'll be changing the oil every 20,000km and the filter (genuine Motorcraft FL-820S) every 10,000km.

Synthetic oil is meant to last.....but it isn't doing squat if you're dumping it into an oil change bucket and not letting it do its job.

Thanks for all the advice!!!

Terrific forum!! Thanks for all the good advice. Sounds like the MC oil and MC filter is a safe bet. Only looking to do what's best.

Take care!!

Nobody changes my oil but me. I use Amsoil and their EA filters. My dad used to have the dealers change his oil. Several added an extra quart of oil. One cross threaded the oil plug. The quicky places are cheap for a reason, and it's not because of high quality materials or workmanship.

The other day I got a coupon from the local Ford dealership for a 9.95 oil change with syn oil and filter. (5 qts). so my '05 takes 7 qts, was wondering what they charge for a qt. sounded too good to be true. In 40 yrs, I have never paid anyone to change my oil. In regards to syn vs dino. A very in depth research article I read a few yrs ago, basically boiled it down to this... little marbles in the man made lube, or big marbles in the dead animal/plant lube. Which one do you think will wear the metal down faster?
