high pressure in tank pump

I have the high pressure in tank pump. I have found out that the truck runs out of fuel after useing about 18 gallons (I have the 33 gallon tank). I pulled the pump and the strainer is really black colored so I order a new one. My question is would the pump pull fuel from the large open line at the top of the plastic body but not the strainer cuaseing it to run out of fuel at about half a tank?

No. It all comes through the strainer. The return line is supposed to keep the pump cool if it's not fully immersed. You might have the wrong pump assembly. Make sure it's going all the way to the bottom of the tank.

The tank is about 14" and so is the pump. I run about 18-19 gallons out of it and I have no fuel. I ran out last wednesday on the way home luckly right in front of the shell station and costed in. I fueled up and bled the filter header (I am running a 6.9 IDI diesel) till all the air was out and she fired right up. I had this problem before but it was runing out at about 24 gallons used. I hate not having the 500 plus mile range any more.

Could there be a bunch of crud floating around in the tank? Maybe stopping flow through the strainer?

I bought a new strainer and plan to drain the tank and check it out. Man I wish tanks still had drain plugs in them lol.

I have often thought about using one of the oil pan drains they have out now. Driling a hole and using an oring on both sides with a nut on the inside. But i probly should just use a weld on bung and pipe plug.
