well welcome to FTE.
so smoke from under the valve covers?weird.is your exhaust pipe smoking?make sure your getting power to the injection pump first.then make sure your motor is spinning over really good.you might try to hook another car up to the pass. side battery and then turning it over to make sure your getting it turned over good enough.

cable5,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Has this engine been running recently?
How many miles are on it?

I once tore down a rebuilt gas engine that had 4 pistons with no rings, but the rebuilder put it together that way. I don't think there is any way for the rings to come off even when broken.

I've seen pieces eat their way out, but never an entire ring without severe damage

Even if broken into rather small pieces, both the piston and cylinder walls would be trashed before the rings could all work their way out completely.

The compression ring is thicker than the piston to cylinder clearance any way you turn it, even if the piece is only 3/8" long.

This kinda makes me want to think maybe you possibly have a stuck, or sticking exhaust valve.

Just read that again, piston 4 id drivers side second from the front.

And if you only pulled the head, you can't tell if the rings are not there or just stuck back in the piston grooves.
