Thinking of a speaker upgrade ...

After taking a good look at the speakers in my 98 Explorer Sport, I noticed that they are crap. I'm considering upgrading so can anyone tell me what size speakers are in the Sport ? I am on a limited budget so I want to get the most for my $. I know the rear sub is completely shot also ( I actually posted about that last week) ... What size sub will fit in the factory enclosure ?

Thanks !

Scott

Fronts and rears are 6"x8" and the sub is 8". Pioneer makes 6"x8" replacements that actually say Ford on them.

Thanks Scucci... You really seem to be the go-to guy for the '98 Explorer Sport ! Could you tell me the best way to remove the speaker grilles without damaging them ?

Thanks ! ! !

I have a 98 sport and have gone through much of what you are doing.
I have heard some guys very carefully pry the grills off with plastic panel tools. I just pull the door panels and the PITA quarter panels. More information is available here:

Real simple to get the back ones off. I just used a screw driver and popped mine right off without any problems. The front I would just take the door panels off. The 6x8 Pioneers are really good speakers. I put some of them in my sisters taurus and they sound great.

Make sure that you replace the wires if you replace the speakers. The stock speaker wire is wimpy.

Well, if he's keeping the stock stereo and amplifier, plus he's on a limited budget, there's really no benefit in changing out the speaker wire. While it would be small for an audiophile system running lots o' watts to each speaker, it's sufficient for the stock amplification. The biggest bang for the buck will come with new speakers.
