As a paramedic, I have seen a lot of sick people recently. Whether it is H1N1 or the seasonal flu, I don't know. The Swine flu is no different that the seasonal flu, other than the fact that it is pretty intense. The doc I work under said that it is too early for the seasonal flu, which is why the are assuming everyone has the piggy flu. There are antivirals you can take, such as Tamiflu. They work well.

The people that die from this die from complications such as dehydration, pneumonia, and things like that. Your immune system is busy fighting the swine flu and gets overloaded when the secondary infection takes place. One thing to keep in mind with dying from the Swine flu... people die from the seasonal flu every year too. The old, young and weak.

The H1N1 vaccine is no different that the seasonal flu shot, except that it targets the piggy virus. Even the seasonal flu shot is a guess. There are a TON of viruses that cause the seasonal flu, and the shot is a guess at which virus will be the popular virus for the year.

If you get sick, rest, drink fluids, and take meds to treat the symptoms you have. If you get to the point where you think you are "too sick" make an appointment and go see your doctor. Unless you have respiratory distress, altered mentation, or another life threating problem, don't call 911. You would be amazed how often I get called to someone's house for flu-like symptoms.

Here's a good one for you.......Obama won't let his daughters get the H1N1 flu shot. Supposedly, they should have gotten it because they are asthmatic. So, they would have been some of the first to get it. I did hear it on a non-nut job radio show.

OMG, thats outstanding.

I like how they call it "N1H1" instead of "Flu" or even "SuperFlu", it just sounds scarier. LOL

they call it H1N1 because when they called it swine flu people stopped buying pork products because they thought they could get the piggy flu from eating pork.

It was reported on the news today that a hog herd here in Indiana has the H1N1. They won't give the location for various reasons. I heard a cat has it, too. There is an outbreak in the Ukraine that has killed 95 people so far but has sickened over 633,000. But the tin foil hat people are having a field day with the outbreak. Has Baxter International Released a New Biological Weapon in the Ukraine? , page 1 Decide for yourself.....

Glad to hear your daughters got over the flu, cjben. Right now, there is a flu "bug" going around at my youngest's elementary school. She came down with a cold, though and gave it to our son. So far, my husband has not come down with anything and he doesn't need to become sick right now.

Since the Hong Kong flu of the 60s, there has been one "Great Influenza Epidemic" scare after another. Anyone remember the first "Swine Flu" scare back in the 70s? I do.... and there were some deaths attributed to a preservative in the vaccine. The 80s "Bird Flu" was touted as the next "great killer" and there was a scramble to get vaccines out for that one.

I believe the biggest "scare" of the H1N1, is it's a variant of the 1918 Spanish Flu which generally hit the healthier population rather than the very young or the very old. But the present version has "genetically drifted" so much from the original, its' affects haven't been nearly as devastating.

I only caught the second round "Hong Kong" flu in 1970 and haven't had the flu since (well....outside of occasional stomach ones my kids would bring home from school). I will get a cold when everyone else has the flu. Go figure.

This is a very serious deal to me. Having Rheumatoid Arthritis, the combination of drugs I take has effectively erased my immune system. A simple cold could literally kill me, thus the reason for flu, pneumonia, and H1N1 vaccines. I don't work or associate(to my knowledge) with anyone who is ill. Why take chances? If knowing a simple shot could save my life, would you do that for me? I'm not a recluse, but careful just the same. Believe me, I used to think I was eight feet tall and bulletproof, but..........stuff happens.

Pete. You are a classic example of the folks who SHOULDN'T take a chance, and should probably get the shot.

IMMHO, the vast majority of 'healthy' folks between 18 and 65 should just wash their hands frequently and eat healthy and exercise....and if they get the damned thing...work with their bodies to fight it off---which 99% will successfully do.
