Need motor advice, 6.0L PSD

Ok so Im buying another Excursion I bought my 05 New with a 6.0L PSD. However the first week I had it the overflow bottle kept blowing coolant through the cap. Went back in they did a EGR Cooler and a flash truck was fine for a few months....

I put in the Diablo Sport Tuner ran the Level 2 Program and drove great tonns of quicker pickup and acceleration, fuel economy was also improved about 2-3mpg.

However the motor was stock, the exhaust was stock and no gauges. This was part and parcel to the fact that my dealership was the one who sold me the tuner and said if i changed my exhaust and put gauges in Ford would not cover my repairs.

SO I had ended up with One Set of Heads, One Grenaded Turbo, Over 6 EGR Coolers, finally a Rebuilt Engine (Which even with the tune at level 3 was a dog for some reason. I felt like I was driving one of my E350's) I had to carry spare Rubber Hoses for the Turbo Inlet Tubes and Clamps as pulling my trailer in stock power would make them blow off.

Now that my truck has hit 287,000KM I finally let Ford Take it back. (Sorry next buyer!!!) Thats all done, and now I need to know WHAT I need to do to NOT Make this happen anymore!!!

I hear people commenting saying EGR Delete, Head Bolts, and Exhaust. Also everyone seems to be using the SCT Tuners. SO My question is simple what is the best order of these and whats top number one, two, three etc. I dont want to waste my money on another Diablo Sport Tuner that was a nightmere. Exhaust Im torn between the name of Banks and the price of and fact that MBRP is local to me.

Any advice is appreciated!!

What they say and whats in writing from Ford are two different things...

Ford would have to prove that your gauges or exhaust caused a failure on or with the engine thanks to Magnusson-Moss Act. The exhaust makes the engine and turbo work better specifically becuase of the design of a diesel engine. A diesel engine is nothing more than a huge air pump; the more air in, the more air out, the better it runs. If you owned a newer 6.4 Powerstroke, I could see them denying the warranty because of your exhaust. (anything DPF-back is ok, but if you hack off the DPF, no warranty.) Gauges are just cheap insurance that tell if things aren't what they should be. Neither one would be the root cause of any failure and benefit the truck more than anything.

The reason why your truck felt like a dog after the rebuilt engine was because of FICM tuning. Ford detuned the FICM to reduce the amount of headgasket failures. As a result, most owners found that their trucks lost power and fuel economy. Power Hungry Performance and Innovative diesel are two aftermarket vendors that can tune the FICM to get you the power and fuel economy your truck originally came with.

The clamps are something you have to keep tight at all times. Even with my 7.3, I periodically check my clamps and make sure they're tight. Sometimes I find 1 or 2 loose and some just need to be tightened down. If you do the CCV mod it'll prevent oil from getting into the boots causing them to slip off. You can also clean them and use hairspray (aquanet) before you put them back on.

If it were me, I would do the exhaust first. It'll open things up, net me a few more miles per gallon, and little more power before the next mod. (I would not waste my money on a banks system, because pipes are pipes, it doesn't matter who you get them from, the only difference is the muffler.) I would do the Headbolts next, it's an expensive job unless you know somebody that can do it for a reasonable cost. Never let the dealership install them unless it's under warranty, you'll pay way too much. Local diesel peformance shops will charge you much less, especially if you already have the studs. There isn't too much to the EGR delete and it's not as expensive as the headbolts, so it would be next on the list. (Most shops may do the studs and EGR delete all at once though) Once you do that, the motor is now virtually indestructible and ready to be tuned. An SCT X3 with either Innovative or Spartan tunes would be my choice.

This is what I would do if funds were limited and I could only afford to do things one at a time. If you're willing to get the parts and do everything at once, a diesel performance shop may be willing to cut you a deal on the labor.

All kidding aside, if you wanna spend money needlessly, buy stuff with the name Banks on it. If you would rather spend less, while getting better quality stuff (or in some cases, just as good), then shop around, do searches here to figure out what most guys like and why.

Banks was a pioneer, and is great at marketing and taking peoples money, but he is FAR from the best. He's just overpriced.

I would do the head studs and EGR delete first, then add on from there.
The MBRP exhaust would be next. Then finally the SCT tuner to bring it all together.
