2002 Squeaking From Rear of Engine

My son’s ’02 Ranger has a squeaking sound coming from the upper rear part of the engine (3.0 v6 w/ man. trans). There is a small solenoid of some sort on the passenger side that’s kind of hard to get to, and has a wire leading from the wire harness going to the solenoid. I have no idea what this part is, but put I a stethoscope on it and definitely amplified the sound. (Sound is like what a squeaky pulley would sound like)
Appreciate any advice on what might be causing the squeaking sound and/or what this part is. Thanks!!!

Camshaft Position Sensor, it's pretty common problem in that I've seen it on this site before. I think it's a simple fix. Somebody will get you a more complete response soon.

"camshaft position sensor"
Thanks for the reply, you're exactly right. I looked it up and that’s the part where the sound is coming from (ignition distributor). Looks like they sell for around $100. Now I just need to know if it’s something we can replace, or do we need to take it to a Mech.??
