Code P0731 and Edge
I read a little about this code on here, there wasnt a whole lot on it. I have the 4.6 and just got the edge this week, i have been running it on level 2 with some custom settings. Well i went out to go hunting this morning and left my driveway and got the TRANS FAULT O/D OFF message on my dash. The truck was running fine, never missed a beat. After, i looked it up on the edge while driving and it said "unknown" so i cleared it and it came right back. So i went hunting and when i was done i got back in my truck and as soon as i turned the truck it did the trans fault thing again and still the truck ran fine. I drove it home and it went out by itself and i checked it with the edge again and it was gone, i also checked it with my code scanner and it didnt show anything. So i turned the truck off and back on again and it came up (without me even putting it in gear) So i read a little on here about it and how some people with the edge were getting it and it said to return the truck to stock and then program it again. The problem other were having was with something with the "bogus" entries the edge inserts when you custom program it and dont set everything on the list? Im not sure. So i put it back to stock drove it a couple miles and it was gone. No problem and so after i drove it a couple miles i stopped and put Level 2 back on it without custom anything and drove it about 15-20 miles and it never came back and the code is gone.
Do you guys think it was just a fluke with the edge? I just updated the edge on monday. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure what would be causing it to do that, but I have read in other threads with similar problems with Edge programmers on F150's. I would be calling Edge tech people for some answers, though. Or you could send it to Bill at Power Hungry Performance and have it turned into a Gryphon tuner with custom tunes. I have an SCT X3 with custom tunes and haven't had any problems at all.

A little more info i just checked. A while ago i added some lucas transmission treatment. And the other night about a week ago i just realized when i checked the fluid (proir to getting edge) that my fluid was over the "Do not add" mark, so i used a tiny hose and sucked a bunch out till it was in the Hot range (car was still warm from driving) so i left it, then i checked it this morning after it sat all night after thinking of that. and on level ground there was just a tiny bit of fluid on the bottom of the dipstick. So would a low cold level give me that code until the engine and trans warmed up because of the increase in line pressure from the edge? Cause after the truck was warmed up the code went away. Im just thinking out loud because i didnt notice any problem with the truck shifting or anything. Any more thoughts?

Another update, if anyone is reading this stuff, While the truck was dead cold, running in neutral on level ground, i check the tranny fluid, nothing on the stick (This was after i sucked a bunch out the other day cause i put too much in it a couple weeks ago when checking all fluid) Got the fluid back up to spec level.
Drove it from cold while stock for about 15 miles, never missed a beat, ran perfectly fine. Pulled over and tuned it with the can level 2 tune. drove it another 15 miles and everything was perfectly fine. I even dropped the shifter all the way down to first gear and it ran fine.
I think what i saw was all the conditions were right with the low fluid and cold start that i got that code and when the fluid got up to temp it was fine. Unless i see something else or someone else has any ideas, im going to chalk this one up to the low fluid condition. I only drove it about 10 miles yesterday while i had that code. So im sure i didnt hurt anything and im fine. Still, anyone have any thoughts yet?

It's possible that the low fluid level caused the codes. As I've said before I have an SCT X3 so I'm not that familiar with Edge. The folks at Power Hungry are familiar with Edge products and they are the only ones i know of that can turn the Edge into a custom tuned programmer. If you can't get a definitive answer from Edge try Power Hungry Performance. They are sponsors here and should be able to get the answers you looking for and can also make your programmer even better than with the canned tunes.

Well I've driven the last two days on level 2 after adjusting the fluid and returning to stock and reprogramming level 2 and no signs of the code or problems and this morning when I left it was 28* outside and I've been watching my trans temp and shifting on the edge the trans temp never got over 161* and never missed a shift. I think my fluid level was the cause.

Hey, mine did the same thing! I had it set on the "tow setting" for about 400 miles, and just this morning, right after I pulled out of my driveway, I got the error. I flashed it back to stock, and the error went away. I checked the fluid level also, but it was good. I haven't tried programming it again yet.
Has yours been running fine?

Mine has been running like a champ ever since. Check your fluid when your truck is dead cold right after you start in when its in neutral on flat ground. My fluid level looked fine when the truck was warm and the code went away when the truck warmed up. Check your truck when its dead cold and make sure. Just a thought.

Since the Edge is a tuner that has shift on the fly capabilities, it may be due a connection problem with the DTC port. That's the difference between Edge and SCT tuners. The SCT actually reflashes the PCM and then u disconnect it. There are no connectivity issues. But u can't shift on the fly to a different tune. Try tuning it again making sure the connections are good.
