inner tie rod play on '06 Freestyle AWD LTD

Just had a set of tires installed. Mechanic indicated that the inner tie rods had too much play to align properly. I hadn't noticed any looseness in the steering, drift or noise. The vehicle has under 60,000 miles on it. This seems premature for such wear. I'll have my regular mechanic inspect it Mon but was wondering if anyone had experience with this steering assembly issue.

Well a trusted mechanic sez the inner tie rods are fine. That there is a bit of play in the rack but this is the only Freestyle he's seen so he's not sure if that's within spec or not. We'll see if the tire store will go ahead and do the alignment. I am beginning to suspect that they were making a money grab on a slow Sat morning. Time will tell...
