question about 40's

well im still looking for a SD and i came across a pretty nice one today. its already lifted which can be a good or bad thing but it seemed like it was done right and never taken off-road or beat on too hard. anyways, it had 40 x 13.50 tires on what looked like an 8 inch lift (guy at dealership had no idea) and they were rubbing like crazy. this never bothered me on previous trucks but with the CC LB i feel like i kinda need the turning radius. what size lift would it need to clear 40's? ive also considered (if i even buy it) to just put 38s on it anyway. it also felt like it had stock gears and it only got 9.8 mpg. what gears would you recommend for 40's and how much would they improve the mileage? id like to get at least 12 mpg. and i should probably mention it was an 04 PSD. thanks in advance

Were the tires rubbing the body/bumper or the leaf springs? And for gears with 40's Id go atleast 4.88 or even 5.13

Only got 9.8 mpg? My 6.0 only gets 13 on stock everything around town, are you sure that the speedo is calibrated right? I've heard something about the comp only being able to go down to 600 revs a mile on tires, and that's somewhere are a 34" tire. Going from 31s to 40s without being recalibrated, you can be off by over 16mph. I second a regear down to 4.88, that should put you pretty much back at stock revs.

Not knowing what kind of springs or anything about the lift, I'd say ditch the 40s, drop down to a 37 and leave it there. If you want to keep the tires, go buy a Whiplash 12" kit and put that on there, it should clear.

Go play here: Calulators from www.4Lo.com

yea i agree drop the 40's down a size or two...

36-37" tires will still be huge and look good, but return some of ur lost power for sure..

but i still think u'll want a regear to truely get back the power/MPG u've lost with that beast..

got pics ???

Ive got 36's and stock 3.73 and Im in desperate need of a re-gear, just not in the budget atm. Its totally livable for everyday driving but hook up the smallest of trailers and its like I threw the anchor out. Im gonna go 4.56 or 4.88 in the spring when work picks back up.

Yeah it would definately need some new gears or smaller tires the speedo felt like it was about right. Also they were rubbing the wheels wells not the leaf springs. Not sure if im trying to spend that money right after buying the truck. 06silvercrew im surprised you feel like you need gears dont these trucks come stock with like 34s?

the only reason it was so high is because its from a dealership. if it was privately owned, it would go for like 26-27, which is still rediculous IMO. but thats what theyre going for around here

I picked up my 2003 F350 w/55k miles for $21k in Socal. Granted, I had a leaking EGR Cooler, headgaskets ready to go and a cracked turbo. $8k later this truck is amazing; completely built. The price you're looking at seems a little high. I would get a complete OASIS REPORT on the truck to see what's been done to it.

40's should required a 10-12" lift, unless you mod the front fenders. And then go to 4.3 or higher for better torque. The problem is, I still have the stock 3.73 and it'll light em up no prob. I know it is more toque on the trans, so next year I'll likely go to 4.30 with 39's.

Ian123,

I didn't; until we tore into the engine. The guy whom I bought it from kind-of lied to me. But to give him the benefit of the doubt, he said that after he removed the Edge Tuner, the CEL went on. When in reality, the CEL light probably came on because the EDGE programmer helped crack the turbo due to heat; then he pulled it (EDGE) off of the truck.

I wanted to change the EGR Cooler, and when that came off, it was bad, which led to the idea that the heads may be going. And since we were that far into it, we might as well raise the cab and do the headstuds. Not pretty on the wallet, but it is better peace of mind knowing these problems are fixed.

As ofr your answer, white smoke OR coolant from the exhaust is NOT a good sign; most likely coolant being burned or dripping out.
