Starting fluid won't hurt motors if used right. You want to have the motor cranking over at normal cranking speed before it is shot in the breather. It is ok to use just use it right. If I am by myself I used a remote starter switch on the relay.

You can use ether on a diesel, but its not recommended on these trucks. Make sure you dissable the glow plugs first, and use a very very very small amount of ether. However much you use is too much!!

You can use WD-40 and a hair drier stuck into the intake air line/duct.
I started my '95 PowerStroke that way two days ago.

You can use a flammable brake cleaner and that will work fine. That's what I used when I was trying to start my truck after changing the IP. I had talked to the guy at an injection repair shop and he told me not to use either but to find some highly flammable brake cleaner at the auto supply store or wally world. Also I tried using sither to start an Isuzu years ago and it cost me a starter.
