Hmmmmmm Mystery issue?

OK...so in my other post I had the problem of the diesel smell when it snowed. Well it was nice today, no snow fall, and the smell is gone...but that is another issue...

Today, I left work and as I was getting on the interstate, I noticed a little "shudder" as I was accelerating. I thought at first it had something to do with my hubs since they were still locked and I have been using 4x4 quite a bit over the past coupl eof days. Then I noticed that my SES light was on. CRAP!! Now what!?

Well I noticed that if I gave it a little more pedal to accelerate just a little, the shudder was there. But if I gave enough pedal so that it shifted out of OD and the RPM's went up, no shudder. No smoke or anything else odd other than the shudder and slight loss of power. After about 3 minutes of this going down the interstate, I saw the SES light flicker a little then go out...and the shudder was gone. WTH???

So I stopped at a parts store and used their reader....NO CODES was what I got. AAAAAAHHHHH!!!!! I thought it was supposed to store them.

Well it ran fine the rest of the ride home. Fine to the store and the restaraunt and home again. UGH.

Now don't get me wrong... If it was a temp thing that was a fluke, I won't mind. But I doubt that is the prob.

So I pray to you diesel gods and await the heavenly advice that will lead me to the answer. (OK too cheesy....)

HALP! (better?)

It DOES store the codes. Parts stores don't have the right tools to read the codes. Often they can clear the codes so that nobody else can read them.

If it does it again you should find a GOOD independent shop or a Ford dealer and get the codes read correctly.

Where did you get the codes read? Most places can't read the codes on our trucks is why I ask. Maybe CPS problem? Seems like I remember some discussion on this topic before and there was a sensor, maybe the ICP, can't remember for sure though. Just throwin those 2 out there for now. Let's see if we can get some other input though.

Codes were there, but generic scanners can't read them.

I'm willing to bet you have a UVC harness that's starting to come loose.

Great info Mark. I knew they can't read our engine codes, but I was not aware they could clear them and just muddy up the waters.

Or a fellow FTE member with AE. There are a few here from the Denver area, and there is a pretty active powerstoke local club there also. One of them will probably scan it for you for free.

Forgot about the harness being a possibility, that's a good call from Curtis.

1) That's your harness under the valve cover. They are prone to coming loose. Once that happens, you'll get random periods of rough running, SES light popping up from time to time, etc, until it falls off and shuts off half the engine.

2) I'm here in Parker, and I have AE. Let me know when you want to meet up and I'll scan your truck for you. That way I can tell you which side is causing the problem.

Thank you Curtis for stopping by.
I have the valve cover off and will finish it tomorrow. The harness was a bit loose and I got it seated much better. But I got called away to help a buddy of mine with his trailer that busted a spring bolt on the side of the road. Too dark to finish it now.

Thanks again.... Now to get started on some of those other mods!

Rep points to you and who knows...I may just call you up soon for lunch or a beer since I go through Parker pretty much every day.

It was my pleasure to help him. Always fun to meet another FTE member, and Bill is a super nice guy.

Besides, that was the best way to put the mod bug in him
