Question confused on what i have...

ok new here i know... and these are stupid questions but in the last month i have ordered stuff for my truck and nothing fits or works.

i was sold a 77 f250 custom 4x4 with a 460 and c6
the vin decodes as a "H" 351

is there a way to tell if it is a 460 or 351? afftermarket carter carb 4bl on it and affter market intake manifold.... what can i do to tell whitch it is?

most engine parts are interchangable but i am having an issue with a gas cap... it had non when i got it home i ordered one for the rear mount tank and it does not fit... what options could some one have put into this as far as a filler tube so i can get a gas cap?

also it has exhaust leaks i want to get a new dual done , my question is what is the average price for this i have seen bolt on kits for 219.00 but local shops are saying 400 - 800...

thanks for your help and replys...

Parts between the 351M/400 and 460 do not interchange (for the most part).
Probably the easiest way to tell the 2 engine families apart is where the thermostat is located. If the thermostat housing attaches to the block its a 351m/400. Another way is count the valve cover bolts. If you have 8 valve cover bolts on each side you have a 351m/400. As far as the gas cap, I dunno. I can tell you the gas caps from my 1966 Fairlane and 1977 F-150 will interchange so it would seem a gas cap is a pretty universal thing but maybe not. That's rediculous for the exhaust, but I'm sure that counts their labor, if you do it yourself you'll save a bit. My truck had dual 351m exhaust and I gave it to my uncle. I swapped the 460 into my truck. I paid $225 for used L&L fender well headers. Then $20 for 2 sections of 3 inch pipe. Then bought some flanges for like $2 each. Then bought some dynomax bullets off ebay with flanges already bolted to them for $40. Less than $300 in mine and thats full length headers and a dual 3 inch system. I also have a set of 3" MAC mufflers that I put on sometimes. Nice thing about fenderwell headers is you dont have to have any pipes bent, just a simple bolt together.

This is only my personal experience, but my truck spent most of it's life in Cali, and it has different gas caps.

Just so you know, Ford never put a 460 into any 4x4s until the 80s so that would be why the vin decodes to a 351. Yours was just swapped in, which isn't unusual it's one of the more popular swaps.

I just had new dual exhaust and glasspacks put on my f100 and it only cost me 220 dollars at my local muffler shop. 400-800 seems outragous unless that is including the price of a name brand muffler or glasspack.

Yep sounds like a 460 or 429, they look the same externally. In my opinion that is a major plus vs still having the 351m.

Furyus1 is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
To add to what was already stated: One cap is a "deep cam" cap and the other is a "shallow cam" cap... I have to run the deep cam non-emission caps on my truck as the others won't fit - they'll slide on but they won't latch...

that seems to be the issue. i have got 2 caps that go on but can't push it to a latch state it seems to bottom out before latching. the last one i got says it is a 77 - 78 locking w/o ca emissions. so do i need to try one for ca emissions?

You have a 1977 F250. If it was sold new in CA...it has the Evaporative Emission System.

Even if it was not sold new in CA, it could still have Evap Emission. Does you truck have a charcoal cannister, and vapor valves mounted on the top of the fuel tanks?

If so...it has Evap. Emission. There are no CA only fuel caps, the same fuel caps fit all with Evap Emission.

The reason the caps are marked CA only...is because all 1970 and later vehicles sold here in CA have Evap. Emission, but other states also required it.

See post #8 for the correct fuel caps for 1977/79's.

There are two different diameter fuel caps used in 1977/79's, because Styleside Pickups have the caps behind fuel doors, the other trucks do not.

If you want two locking fuel caps keyed alike:

D7TZ9030C .. Locking Fuel Cap Set ~ Chrome Finish ~ 2 5/8" O.D. / Use w/Evap. Emission (Motorcraft FC803) / Obsolete

Fits: 1977/79 F100/350 Styleside Pickups with mid-ship & aft axle fuel tanks.

SOEBY MOTOR CO. in Walhalla ND has ONE = 701-549-3711.

CURRENT RIVER FORD in Doniphan MO has ONE = 573-996-7163.

RED TAYLOR FORD in Corning AR has ONE = 870-857-3518

No other Ford Dealer, no obsolete parts vendor has any.
-------------------------------------------------------
D7UZ9030G .. Locking Fuel Cap Set ~ Chrome Finish ~ 3 7/8" O.D. / Use w/Evap. Emission (Motorcraft FC802) / Obsolete

Fits: 1977/79 F100/350's with mid-ship & aft axle fuel tanks with exposed fuel caps / 1977/91 Econoline w/dual fuel tanks.

PLEASANTVILLE FORD in Pleasantville NY has ONE = 914-769-1800.

BEASLEY FORD L/M in York PA has ONE = 717-755-2911.

WESLEY OBSOLETE PARTS in Liberty KY has TWO = 606-787-5293.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has THREE = 800-543-4959.

No other Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

there was a charcole can mounted at the battery tray... not hooked up... as far as the top of the tank i don't know. the front tank was removed and selector switch has been bypassed. the fuel sending unit was hooked up to the left rear turn signal wire and not grounded. basicly all wireing from cab back has had to be redone just to get lights to work. i have a first purchased a stant # 10574 and that is the same issue as the one i got fro botp. so i am going to try and find a stant # 10582 and see if that works. thanks for all your help.

If there's a charcoal cannister...whether it's hooked up...or not, your truck has Evap. Emission.
