EFI, Injector Questions on 89 4.9L
I'm trying to resurrect an '89 F150 4x4, I6 that has sat for two years. I'm not a mechanic, just and enthusiastic tinkerer so its been quite a struggle/learning experience. I got the truck running, but it has no power, so off it went to the local garage for diagnostics. The result is injectors 1, 4 & 5 just aren't workin' right. The mechanic said they could be gummed up or plugged from rust in the tank (gas tank was empty for 2 years. first thing I did was a new fuel filter, but mechanic said some could have accumulated in the lines??). He quoted about 150 per injector plus installation. The truck was originally a father/son project but the son decided to move to a tuner car. The truck is now slated to go to camp every other weekend and that's about it, so low-buck is a big deal. Adding this all together, I have many questions..
1) How difficult is it to remove the injectors for someone with basic handtools and experience?
2) Is there an inexpensive way to clean injectors when removed from the rail? I've looked at several threads in different places and the answer is Yes/No/Maybe...
3) I found a guy on Ebay who will clean them for 50.00. Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing?
FUEL INJECTOR CLEAN TESTER FLOW CLEANER REMANUFACTURED:eBay Motors (item 160371927067 end time Nov-21-09 11:00:09 PST)
4) Is there a way/should I attempt to clean the fuel rail and line from the fuel filter forward? Should I just run it open and flush gas through it?
5) Considering its three injectors, should I just scrap the project?
Any other thoughts/advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks..

I had a 95 F150 with I-6 sat for 4 years full of gas, all of it evaped an caked everything in fuel lines, pump screen, injectors you name it, If tank is clean, you can remove the injectors your self, If your replacing pretty simple, I had a problem an I broke the plastic disc on end of injector an had to replace jus those but I removed mine took some cleaner to them as well as the fuel rail, and mine worked great when all was said an done, I had to change tanks everything from gum an varnish from lefdt over fuel.It kept stopping up my filter after 2 days lol.

Removing the injectors is easy. If you can turn a wrench you can install and remove injectors. You just remove the upper intake and unbolt the fuel rail. The injectors just pop off the rail and they come out of the intake.
Cleaning them is another issue. If you want to clean them the right way, you should find someone who has a sonic cleaner and is experienced in cleaning fuel injectors. If you want to clean them the fast & easy way, buy a rebuild kit on ebay for the injectors, which will include new o-rings and new pintle caps, and soak them in kerosene, seafoam, or another solvent overnight. Then re-assemble them and put them back in. This is what I did with mine, but none of mine were clogged.
I've also heard of people who blow air through them backwards to clean them out, using a battery to give them current to open and close as they are blowing them out. That was a little too complicated for me so I passed on that step.
fordfuelinjection.com has a good write-up on their site about cleaning fuel injectors yourself.
