Ive been searching the forums, lots of info on the heater core but i have a pretty specific question....all the parts houses and catalogs have heater cores for my truck but they state specifically "without ac.." my 72 has the underdash factory air. I replaced the core myself before, but it was 10 years ago and I cant remember if I had the same issue. Does anyone know if the cores are different for trucks with a/c vs trucks with no a/c?
My core isnt leaking...but I have to replace my blower fan so I thought while I had that monster a/c unit apart I would change the core too.. Would it be ok just to take the old one out and flush it or would it be better to replace it if I can find the right one....

Unless you have overheated the truck to the point that it was belching steam and making noises like it was popping corn so the pressure in the cooling system was unbelievably high trying to explode the hoses and blow off the radiator cap, the heater core should be fine. If you have kept clean antifreeze in the cooling system and it hasn't been run "full of rust" with only water, the heater core should be clean and probably last another 10 years. But if any of the above has occurred, then you could have a problem later on. But if no problems now.....leave it alone. OH, you are probably going to go literally crazy trying to find a stock heater core for the factory A/C unit also......

Matlock will prolly be cheaper...but...most radiator shops can recore heater cores.
MotorDog: It took me 30 seconds to find these two NOS heater cores. All you need to know is, how...and where...to look.

However, not sure how the others on this Board feel, but I myself am very glad to have you around and I know sometimes you don't get the thanks you should get, but then I think you love what you do and that matters most to you. Larry Miller....isn't that the former Rick Warner Ford dealership?
When I was at Crenshaw Ford in LA (1975/85), Warner was the largest parts stocking Ford dealer in the world (Crenshaw was #3).
But...we sold lots of parts to Warner, but...I can't recall one time we bought anything from them.
I'm using the same in-house Ford Dealer Parts Locator System that Miller (and every other FoMoCo dealer) uses.
You are correct...I loved the job, had to retire in 1997 due to disabilities....physical that is...not mental.
Now...I'm playing partsman here on FTE...with the same no nonsense (crabby) additude I had at the parts counter for 35 years.
Have always had a strong work ethic...being LDS prolly has somthing to do with it.

Yep! Number Dummy, Larry H. Miller bought out Rick Warner Ford quite a few years ago. But they are the same except they have a new building which is 3 or 4 times as large as Rick Warner was. I worked for Rick Warner in their Heavy Duty Truck Shop and even was the Night Shift Foreman for some time. Wore my back out and went off on my own. Anyway, more retired now and at least way more independent so I only do what I want when I want......Just love my old Fords........
wow, i didnt know radiator shops could recore those....it makes sense though, its basically a little radiator.. im going to start tearing it down this weekend to replace the blower motor, hoses, clamps, and heater valve...i will flush out the core a little but ill just keep using it. the truck has always had coolant in it since i replaced it last, although it spent about 7 years just sitting while i was living in another part of the country. thanks for the info guys...
already bought one! i had a heater hose blow out a while back and when i replaced it i noticed that the ends on the existing valve were pretty deteriorated...i thought it would be a good idea to replace it before it caused a leak. the only thing i will have to rig up is the braket on the ac unit closest to the driver....a while back i hit a good bump and it broke and the entire left side of the unit came down. i propped it up with two bricks, i think i can just get a small bracket of some kind from the hardware store and fix it.
(cant bring myself to call someone I dont know dummy, haha...)
its actually a bracket on the inside of the cab. there are two, one on each end of the factory ac unit...they are attached to the unit and then are bolted up to the bottom edge of the dash. it looks to me they are molded onto the unit (or somehow just part of it) so i didnt think i would be able to find a replacement.
i was gonna improvise..(we never do that, do we??!) the bricks holding the unit up now like to slide on the trans hump cover..lol
mine came with the Explorer D package, so lots of extras. dad said that ac always would freeze you out in the middle of summer. once i get some money saved up, im going to get it switched over to 134a and get it working again

haha thats awesome you mention that. i have a ac/dc power inverter bolted to my transmission hump and the wire going behind the a/c unit tucked away all nice, AND THE AC UNIT IS RESTING ON IT PERFECTLY AND ITS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A BRICK
