2000 explorer 4wd not working

Hi all, new to this forum. I bought a 2000 explorer sport in Feb.(after my Aerostar finally died) I have noticed that I can't get the truck into four wheel. I have not really checked into this yet, but I want to get it done by the winter. Truck runs fine otherwise. Where should I start? Thanks.

FireMe is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
So, what does happen when you switch to 4WD? Do the dash lights change, any clicking noises, anything?

The transfer case is controlled by the Generic Electronic Module which receives inputs from many sensors to determine if the 4WD should be engaged. The GEM is diagnosed with scan tools and if you've already checked for blown fuses or any other obvious problems, there isn't much you can do without pulling codes from the GEM.
