M5OD Noisy in all gears but 4th

I have a 95 Ranger 2wd with 3.0 and M5OD. The truck has 209,000 miles. It started making a whining gear sound in all gears except for 4th. I checked the fluid and it is full of clean ATF. The sound got worse (scary) after a few days. I called my favorite yard looking for a transmission before I decided to have this one repaired and they didn't have one. They said they get them all the time and they sell fast for 400 bucks! Sounds expensive to me. Anyway now the trucks sittin in front of a transmission shop about to get tore down. How bad is this? All the transmission shop guy said is it will be a minimum of 300 bucks.

SOUNDS LIKE THE COUNTERSHAFT BEARINGS ARE JUNK.WHEN ITS IN 4TH THATS 1 TO 1 RATIO,STRAIGHT THREW THE INPUT SHAFT TO THE TAILSHAFT.WHEN YOU SELECT THE OTHER GEAR THE POWERFLOW IS TRANSFERED FROM THE INPUT SHAFT TO THE COUNTER SHAFT TO THE OUTPUT SHAFT,THUS GIVIN YOU THE NOISE.

I went to the transmission shop today to see how things are going and they had the transmission out. They said the pilot bearing was so trashed it was basically disintegrated and that the input bearing was making noise. The shaft is buggered up to. I am supposed to find out more tomorrow after they open it up. We haven't discussed cost yet so I am nervous. Anyone care to take a stab at what the cost will be?
