Your Opinion on Ford-o-Matic

Hi Guys: I need your opinion on installing a 292Y as was originally in this truck. 1964 F100. I also have a Ford-O-Matic on hand that I would like to install in it as well. My grandsons dont like 4 on the floor tranny. What do you think about this set-up. Joe

Joe, If them boys want to drive grandad's truck, they will learn to shift gears, bet you did, I know I did, why are you selling them short??

Anyone that can drive a manual shift can drive an auto, but not the other way around.

One grandad to another.

Have fun paying for type A trany fluid. $70 a pail and the only place I found it for another user was directly through ford.

Slush boxes are ok, for girls. The fordomatic is a good piece for its era.

I got a 12 yearold who can drive a four speed why can't your grandsons?

Thanks Guys for all your opinions. The reason I wanted to use the Automatic is that I have had setting around for 25 yrs and 4 speed in the truck is in bad shape. Just thought I would get your opinion on the tranny. All the Ford cars my father had from 1952 onward all had Ford-O-matics in them Thanks again Fellows for your help. I am sure I'll have lots of questions yet with this truck. Joe

Joe, If you have had it for 25 years it should be rebuilt before install. Thing is you are dealing with 50 year old technology, so go with care.

the cruse-o-matic is pretty bullet proof but if its been setting that long you should have it rebuilt .on the other hand i bought one from an old man that said it had set on the rack in his shop for 10 years i was along way from home i put it in a a road side rest stop and it works great that was 5 years ago. i still recomend to re bulid it

I had a Cruise-0-Matic in a '64 Galaxie w/390. It's a big ol piece of iron and not much of a performance tranny. Cool thing is you can push start a vehicle with one. You drive it in D2. In D1 you start out in second gear which is good for snow or loose dirt.

I dont know how much a rebuild on a cruise O matic is but a good local trany shop should be able to rebuild your T98 for about $700 with new syncros and all that jazz.
I know a good C4 or turbo 350 rebuild is about a grand.

Type A? What the heck is that? There is no Type A ATF listed in any Ford car/truck parts catalog.

It's Type F ATF: All 2 & 3 Speed Ford-O-Matic's / All FX/FMX/MX Cruise-O-Matic's / 1964/76 C4 / 1966/76 C6.

For 55 years...there was no power steering available...at all (first: 1951 Chrysler).

No A/T's at all until 1940 (Hydra-Matic), and then only in Oldsmobile's & Cadillac's.

No Ford vehicle had an A/T till 1950 (Hydra-Matic in Lincoln's).

What the heck...90 lb. grandma's drove vehicles from Model T's to Duesenbergs without any of this jazz for decades, and could parallel park them, too.

Yet...some ppl today...cry, p!ss and moan because their vehicles have no P/S or A/T's.

Sorry ND you are right, sort of.
Type A was used by ford in power steering and convertable lift roles. It is actualy GMs original tranny fluid. Fords was type F. I have seen both of the items I listed saying as such with my own eyes.

Type F is superseded by mercon. If you do a fresh rebuild you sould be able to run mercon.
Just use the 4 spd, 80-90W is the oil.
