Question Timing Qs on new EFI Conversion

I am finishing my EFI conversion and am having a little issue with the timing and running. The truck is not streetable yet.

Specs - .030 overbore, E303 cam, stock H.O. intake and MAF, L1C EEC and a MAF, converted Crown Vic. harness.

Problem - With the SPOUT disconnected I can get the engine started and set the timing (currently 10 BTDC) so that the engine runs. When I connect the SPOUT the engine will continue to run for some time and seemingly well but when I shut it off it is very hard to restart. I mean really hard, engine does not want to turn over. I can sometimes get it to crank but most times I have to disconnect the SPOUT to restart.

This is my first EFI conversion (and this little set back has not discouraged me from my next) I have followed the article posted on this site along with diagrams and articles posted on forfuelinjection.com. One thing that I do need to mention is I may only be supplying 8-9vdc to the TFI on pin 3 which is the 12v Start Only.

FYI: I am posting in several other forums to get more coverage so don't be surprised if you see this elsewhere!

Thanks,

Did you already cut the big pink "resistor" wire at the ignition switch & replace it with at least a 16ga. wire to power the coil & TFI?

Thank you for the reply. I did not cut and replace the wire you mentioned. So, sounds like I have a little more work to do. Do you have any details or other pointers that will help?

I think that I am a little closer. I found the issue with the hard starting. I have the timing at 10 BTC. The engine runs very smooth and strong with the SPOUT connected. But, when connected, the engine runs really rough, does not smooth out and as I check the timing I can see it bounce around back and forth as if trying to figure itself out. When I turn off and try to restart with SPOUT connected, the engine fires for a moment but will not run.

Code Scanner test...

KOEO - 565 CANP Sol. Failure (not installed) 558 EVR Failure (not connected)
KOER - Could not perform

There's an ECM error. Either something's hooked up wrong or the ECM could be bad. The spout harness could be shorted to ground, but shouldn't be, if it's a new harness.

I made a little more headway last night. I did some reading about the TFI and felt that I could be looking in the wrong direction. So on a whim I disconnected the MAF sensor and it fired right up. KOEO codes were 998 (fault mode) and 157 (MAF sensor low volt). The engine ran rather well and looking at the timing I noticeed it was advanced indicating that the ECM was controling it. I started looking into the MAF wiring but ran out of time. I did verify that I have the right sensor for my ECM.

Alright. You're getting somewhere. Make sure you have the right pins in the right spots in the connectors.
