Fellas,
Got a buddy that needs some help and so here it is. He has a 7.3l i think about 90 or so for age. He said that his truck starts fine and is solid when warm but for the first 10 or so minutes it smokes a fine trail of fumes. Said it looks like he is rolling full throttle kind of like the vapor trail you get when you stomp it. After about 10 minutes of rolling down the road he said it goes away. I figured it might be the IP or an injector that is sticking or fouled when cold?? not sure, any help for my bro would be awesome!

he said he had a new thrermostat installed by ford, a motorcraft one so i guess it will be the injector. How can he check them or is it time for a new set, as far as canada goes are there any places that sell them for less than what ford quoted him? Something like 140 a piece? cough cough! haha

Ah again the reason for temperature limiting GPs. You could leave them on for the first 5 miles to help build the chamber temperature without any guess work.
My VW TDI does that. They stay on until the engine goes above 2500 rpm if I am remembering right. But they don't even glow unless the temps are below 40 deg. F. Starts like a charm on compression only when temps are 40+.

Could just be unburnt fuel because of low engine temps.
10 minutes down the road, there is enough heat in the engine for complete combustion.
Dave,
it is about 36-42 F in the morning here. Sometimes a bit cooler but overall about that. Ford installed a brand new thermostat when they installed the engine, at my request. However it never runs aboue the O in normal unless I am towing. Could it be the thermostat? Should I let it warm up a bit longer? How long is a food warm up? With 70,000 miles should I replace the injectors anyway?

My guess is you have an injector or two that are leaking fuel when they should be closed.
The excess fuel is appearing as white smoke until the engine temp comes up.
Does the white smoke smell like fuel?
If so, then that is pointing to injectors.
When temps get a bit lower, the water from combustion will also make a white trail from the exhaust as it condenses in the cold air.
The look is about the same, but no raw fuel smell to the exhaust.
36 to 42 that might be what he is seeing, but that usually takes a colder temp.
Since fuel prices are getting higher again, I don't wait very long before I start driving.
I just take it very easy with the throttle till the engine temp comes up.
