Question 292 engine in '55 Ford pick-up

I'm putting a 292 (1962)in my 55 Ford pickup. Replacing old 239. Want to keep high fan set-up. Does anyone know of any cooling problems using this set-up as the water pump is a bit smaller?

Is it a 239 flathead V-8 or the 239 Y-block overhead V-8 engine? I didn't think the flathead V-8 was still available for the 55 model year? Anyone care to chime in?

'55 Ford Pickup

The engine replaced was an overhead valve 239. The water pump impeller is 4 inches versus 4-3/4" on '62 model engine. I was told that 292's used on some later trucks that the high fan setup was used with the larger pump. Any ideas?

1953 was the last year for the flathead. '54 and newer got the Y-block.

Howdy,

The high mount water pump for your 292 is no smaller than the standard one for the 292. The water pump for the 239 IS smaller. If you're trying to use the 239 pump, you'll have to use the 239 timing cover for it to fit. (And I'm not sure the 239 timing cover will fit on a 292)

I wouldn't use the 239 pump because it's smaller and will pump less water.

I'm doing the same thing in my 55 F-600. I removed a 239 and replaced it with a rebuilt 292 out of a 60 F-100. It didn't come with a high mount pump so I bought one from Rock Auto.....it was a stock item and wasn't very expensive.

I also had to find the correct water pump pulley and correct fan mount since the 239 stuff wouldn't work.

I am also going to fabricate a modified fan mount so I can use a fan clutch and larger flex-a-lite plastic fan.

Cheers,

Rick

Smile '55 Ford pickup

Thanks for input, Rick. I guess that the F-600's '56 and up used the later larger water pump with high mount pump.(272 engine) The nylon fan is a great idea to replace the old metal fly swatter! Will get with Rock auto.
