I just experienced this to and fixed it tonight. It started doing the samething as your describing get hot boil over then cool right back down then about a week later it just stayed in the red. come to find out it was the water pump. The plastic fins was just spinning on the shaft. Put a new one in and problem fixed. hope this helps
then y does it puke when this happens????? and the fan comes on
Sorry - I didn't read post #5 (and I was writing #14 when you posted #13). Tobacco farmer may have you covered, but the early model years were more prone to water pump failures than the 05's and up.
i just changed the thermostat and been driving the truck kinda hard to see if it would overheat or puke and everything is fine for now...tommorow i got a 2hr drive back home hopefully i dont have any problems on the way
I'm interested to see what you problem is. Mine is doing the same thing. I changed my thermostat with a NAPA replacement about 80000 ago so maybe it crapped out on me. Mine only does it when pulling hills at 80 mph or so. It pukes as well and I have headstuds and a egr delete so it sounds like we have the same problem....good luck
well the next morning after changing the thermostat it overheatd AGAIN on the way to work driving at about 65mph so i turned off the truck and put it in neutral and let it cruise like that for a little bit, didnt come to a complete stop then turned it back on and the temp slowy came back down to normal. Andthis afternoon i just took a 2hr trip home driving like at about 80mph most of the way and didnt experience any problems at all!!!!and i kep driving it like i stole it and still no overheating, this is a very random event i cant figure it out!!!....is there a way to check if the water pump is bad without tearing into it????help and thanks for all the replies
5nahury, My 2005 overheated when pulling my 5th wheel up hill as well. The ultimate cause was a clogged oil cooler. Not cheap. hope you're still under warranty
Nope, 133,000 miles. Trying the simple stuff first before I dive into the big items such as EGR/Oil coolers. Ultimately, I believe I'll have to go there. If only it will hold out until the 6.7L hits the streets.
