I have a slight problem. First I will start off by stating that my truck is a 2005 Ford F150 2WD Regular Cab 6.5 Bed, with the V6.

My problem is, when making a left turn at low speeds, I have a grinding noise that corrects itself upon straightening out the truck. This seems to happen on turns in the parking lots etc. It almost sounds like the tires are rubbing but the tires are the same BFG's that have been on the truck for 40,000 miles and have never rubbed. I am thinking it might be the power steering pump but am unsure. I do not have access to a lift right now but I have done the shake test on all of the suspension components and nothing seems out of place or loose.

If you could point me in the correct direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'd check the vacuum lines down near the IWE's. I've seen them routed real tight on the knuckle so a tight turn would give the line a good yank every time. Yours may be tired and cracking if they're like that.

 

Check the power steering fluid. My sisters car slowly leaks power steering fluid and when it gets low there is a grinding noise when she turns. Add some fluid and its gone.

 

I would check em but I have a 2wd


As for the fluid she is all topped off...that is why I am completely confused.

Keep the ideas coming....i will check or try anything to avoid the dealership.

If it's not the power steerning pump, then it seems like it about has to be the spindle bearings, complaining when they see a thrust load.

 

You don't say how many miles in on your '05. I wonder if it could be as simple as needing new disk pads. If so, just replace the pads. If someone says you need new rotors the 2wd uses one piece rotor and hub. Big bucks.

Just had the rotors and pads replaced for the front about 2000 miles ago. The truck is a 2WD and it was big bucks. Anyways I am headed to the dealership tomorrow for them to take a look at it. Hopefully it will be something simple that I just cannot fix or find. I will post back with the results.

I could be the clutch packes in the rear end on my 06 the dealer replaced clutch pack in the diff on my truck cause when I turned sharp you could feel and hear kinda a grinding sound.

 

The miles on the truck are at 40,000 and the rear diff is open, so no clutch packs to deal with. Anyways I am going to head on down to my dealer (140 miles away) and will post back when I hear what is up. Hopefully it is something simple but my suspicion is either the steering linkage or a wheel bearing....either way sounds pricey to me. Check back soon.

Its most likely the bearing and hub assembly, its a little soon for it to be worn out but not unheard of.

 

Hey Guys,
Just got back from the dealer a couple of hours ago. It was the bearings in the front rotors. As it is a 2wd, they had to replace the whole assembly on both sides of the truck.

The good news is, since the dealer just did the brakes with new rotors, less than 2000 miles ago, they said it was under warrenty and there was no charge....AWESOME. Saved some big $$$$!!!!!!

GREEAT. Mine is doing the same thing but i have a 4x4. I thought it may be a rub cause I have 305's. But mine didnt start till after my 2.5 leveling kit.

 

I have installed a 3'' Readylift leveling kit on my 2005 2WD. Mine didnt start till after the kit was installed.
I realized that there are 2 nubs, one on your lower control arm and one on your frame.(sry, dont know how to explain it)
But when stock, the 2 nubs line up and its what keeps you from over turninng. well when you install the kit, the 2 nubs no longer line up causing them to slip or grind past eachother.
Unfortunately i do not know how to fix it. If you grind them off it would cause in over steering and your steering rack could lock up so not an option.

If anyone knows how to fix it, please let me know

 

Hey I had that problem on 2004 f150 I have 24" and its lowered 3/5. I replaced the disc breaks and hubs (wheel bearings) that problem went away. Easy and inexpensive repair. J pep boys has them for $85 each.

 

I had a scraping noise when making left turns. I crawled underneath and noticed the dust shields were both really close to the rotors on the rear wheels. A little adjustment with a plastic non-marring tool wedged in between the rotor and the shield provided enough clearance. No more scraping!
