Ford 4x4 front axle issues. Noise/no disengage...

I need a little insight from you guys more familiar with the Ford TTB and locking hubs than I.
I bought my 97 and none of the 4wd lights worked. I could tell it went into 4wd, but it seemed to have an issue disengaging. Eventually, I found the pigtail unpluged fronm the T case. Now I have lights.
The issue is, when I put it in 4H or 4L, it does NOT want to disengage(tried backing up and such, as well). I literally, have to palmheel the shifter forward, and then it pops right out. No noise, no grinding at all.
Additionally, if the hubs are locked, it makes noise...just a subtile hum, and I can feel it(ive had a bazillion 4x4s, so I can tell it when most cant). Unlock the hubs, and the 'drag' goes away.
Im sure it is a simple grease issue or something, just wondering if there is something I may be missing.
BTW, I have an 82 w/the same front axle assembley, and it has NONE of these issues. Thats what I have based my concerns on...
