Replacement C6 is longer than original, axle issues.

I have a 1984 F250 4x4 with a 460 and C6. I was given a good C6, to replace the trucks blown out one, but have run into a issue. It seems that the C6 I was given is actually longer than the one that came out, I did not pay attention until it was installed and we were bolting up the transfer case. My front axle is now about 3" short and the rear axle is about 3" to long. Is there a set of axles out of another truck that will work for me? The rear axle has a carrier bearing, so I only need to replace the front part of the shaft, is that correct? There is no one around here that does axle work anymore, so I need to find another solution. Is the longer trans going to cause any other issues I am not seeing? The crossmember mounts up like it should. The only other issue I see is the 4x4 gear shifter linkage is to short, but looks like that one will be very easy to overcome. The current axles are 35.25" in the front, which is 3" short. The rear axle, from the center of the u-joint to the center of the carrier bearing mount, is 33.75", which is 3" to long.

You keep saying "axle" do you mean driveshaft? The axles are connected to the wheels and go to the rear end and front end gears inside the differentials.

Yes the driveshafts, use a little reasoning here instead or calling out flaws in my grammer. What would the axles have to do with a transmission swap and why would I have to shorten them for any reason. Not trying to be a jerk, but it is clear what i meant.

I would have to think he means driveshaft because a transmission doesn't change the width of the vehicle.... hmmmm

I don't know the specifics of the C6, I am in Afghanistan and cant look at the one on my motorhome, is the tail housing on the tranny modular like some manual transmissions? if so you could swap the tail housing from your original transmission and make it work, otherwise you might have to fork out the dough to get custom driveshafts made.

I was looking at changing out the manual transmission that I have but I didn't want to screw with getting a different drive shaft.

I might be cheaper to find another used or reman transmission that is the right size...

The tailshaft does look like it can be unbolted, but not for sure if a swap is possible. That is another question someone might be able to answer for me?

I was not trying to be "mean" either. Lets get this back on track I don't care about what people think of comments that I or others have made. I need information. I am trying to fix my truck not start a fight with someone 3000 miles away from me.

Just curouis, are sure they are both C6 tranny's? I dont see them making them a different size considering they are both suppost to be the same one.

When you mean 'driveshaft' but say 'axle' it's confusing. I don't see what's so hard to understand about that. Don't get short with people who are trying to help you, even if they are politely asking you to clarify what you mean. Lots of people with all different knowledge levels come on here and it's not out of the ordinary to use the wrong word.

Also, you seem to have the attitude that you are somehow entitled to the free help on this site. People answer posts on here out of the pure generosity of their hearts and get nothing out of it other than feeling good about helping a stranger.

So maybe be a little nicer and a little less demanding in the future and you'll find that you get a lot farther around here.

As for your question, is there maybe a spacer that you missed on the back of the new transmission? Other than that, it doesn't really seem like anybody here is going to be able to help - none of us are going to be able to make your transmission any shorter. I'd suggest opening up the yellow pages and finding a driveline shop that can modify driveshafts.

You could swap tailhousings, but you would need to disassemble most of both transmissions and I'm still not sure it would fix the problem.

They are both C6 transmissions, the longer tailshaft caught me by surprise as well. It must have come from a old/newer vehicle, but not for sure. I know the shift lever on the good C6 is turned a different direction, which I am told meant it came from a floor shift vehicle. I have already figured out how to fix that problem though. I know GM had different length tailshafts, maybe Ford was doing the same thing?

Thank you

I do not feel I am entitled to anything more than the info others are willing to share with me. My level of knowledge is higher than most, it was like when people say "motor mount". Trust me your vehicle does not have any motor mounts on it, maybe if you have power windows since motors are electric and engines are what is under most folks hood. Besides it would be assumed that I meant driveshaft since swap a transmission would have nothing to do with a diff or its axles. Sorry to offend but it just rubbed me the wrong way.

Other than that I about figured I would have to tear the trans down to change the tailshaft, and there is no removable spacer other than the tailshaft itself. I am not asking for someone to shorten my C6 for me. I would like for someone who has a good knowledge of C6 transmissions to tell me what my best opition would be. I have never been inside a automatic trans before, I have always just swap in a replacement or took it to a shop for repair. Also if anyone knew if there was a truck produced with the driveshaft lengths I need.

Well lets see, I wasn't trying to slam your linguistic abilities, I was just trying to clarify what you were asking. And yes you can have axles with a transmission change, ever hear of a trans-axle? Next since your on a higher plain of enlightenment than the rest of us, explain to me why they call it an outboard motor? I've never heard of an outboard engine have you? Nuff said on that matter.

I'm tired of this argument, I'm going for a ride on my enginecycle now.

Techinal term is a outboard boat engine, another issue like the motor/engine. All three words have definitions in the Webster dictionary, so feel free to enlighten yourself. Transaxle does not apply to a F250, ever heard of a front wheel drive F250 built in 1984? Or ever for that matter?

Not helping anyhting, this is the type of comment that started me on this path. Check the definitions in the Webster dictionary. Motorcycle, engine and motor all have their own definitions. If you were looking up parts at a dealership a "motor mount" is listed as a engine isolation bracket or engine isolation support, depending on the style of the mount.

Could a administrator and/or moderator please delete this thread. I have finished this arugement and have found all the info I need elsewheres on the internet.
