Put in a call to 5star this morning...

Well, I couldn't take reading all your posts any longer. So, tomorrow morning ships a shiny new X3 and it's got my name on it. I went all performance as I didn't buy an 3+ ton vehicle for economy. 87 perf/tow, 91 perf/tow, and 93 perf/tow. Also, were I travel to ride ATV's and sleds they generally don't have 93 only 91. I figure 93 for fun, 87 for every day, and 91 when heading north. I'm thinking 87 won't get used much though...

You won't regret getting the tuner from 5 Star! I almost went with the 3 perf/tow tunes myself but it is a heckuva drive from here before I can get to any 93 pumps. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I think you will be fine running the 93 tune on 91 oct. Typically where 91 is the highest available it is at higher elevation so less oct is needed. I run Mike's 93 tune on 91-92 all the time here with no signs of pinging.

Not that I have diagnosed the issue much, but even running the 87 octane tune, when datalogging I can see the knock sensor hearing it ping and pulling timing. 93 octane tune, even more so.

Again, I haven't really done much about trying to figure out what's going on, but at WOT, it does see something going on.

I do know that if I whack the throttle in just the right way, I can hear it go "pink" once and then the knock sensor does it's thing.

I love my X3. I have three perfomance tunes loaded into mine. I am running the 93 perfomance tune. The best thing about Mike is if you don't like something in the tune he will email you an update that you can download to the tuner then upload it into your truck. For example, I did not like how long the TC stayed locked causing the truck to lumber up hills until the tc unlocked and then the tranny downshifted. I emailed Mike what I thaught and the next day he sent me updates.

I hardly ever drive the truck in OD anymore. It is way too much fun to drive with the TC locked. Hauls booty uphills and you get the engine braking downhill.

PS Wide Open Throttle is very addictive. No more of the Ford throttle delay. Just wait until you floor it for the first time and feel the power upon downshifting. It feels like there was another gear added to the tranny.

Good Luck

Like art said....be sure to tells you what you think!

The only thing I was worried about was exactly what you said. I like when my truck downshifts when towing, but Mike told me to try his tune and if I wanted a change, he would update me ASAP.

Karl4cat: what kind of milage do you get with the 4.30s, I got the 4.10s and get 14.5 to 15 m/t 8.5 to 9.0 towing my 5er at 10.500 lbs.

That's pretty impressive mpg redwing. I don't pay much attention, but I think I'm only getting about 10 empty and 8 towing my aluminum enclosed trailer. She's only about 3500 loaded. I've only got 7500 miles on the truck now which is where people say it seems to break in a bit. Will see....

FedEx to arrive tomorrow! I was almost upset thinking that I would have to wait until I burned out my almost full tank of 87. Then I thought about it and I guess it forces me to try the 87 tune as I imagine it may not be back for a while.

Are you guys pulling your computer to get the code for Mike?

I am on the verge of ordering but thought I would hook it up and email mike the calibration code. He would then email me the tunes.

Is it a big deal to get the code first?

Definitely post back with feed back.
