If by some miracle I got a new job soon I'll be saving up to make an offer on a uni I know of that's just sitting on a farm. (I'll probably offer 500 or so and see what happens) but, I like the 65-66 umm...word i'm looking for... the nicer things on the 65-66, such as the steering column location, the ease of updating to disc brakes and so on. So here's my question, could you put a unibody on the 65-66 frame and basically make it have all those things that make the 65-66s desirable? or do I just live with the old style stuff?
Anyone can make anythiong work if they're willing to fabricate. The frames are not similar between the two. It surely would not be a bolt on affair. I have a 62 and a 66 and like them both. It's not impossible to upgrade the pre 65 models, just a little more challenging since you can't just bolt in 73-79 parts like the 65-up models. Disc brake conversions and engine swap kits are available aftermarket however so not all is lost.
If you are thinking of a chassis swap, why don't you look at a truck that has everything that you want in the running gear and graft the sheet metal on that. Don't swap a chassis and then have to upgrade it.

61 has the FORD in the grill and 62 does not, same as the Mercury,I know cause I have both.
1961 has F O R D in the center of the grille, 1962 has an elongated star in the same location.
1963 is different, as is 1964, 1965, 1966.
But all the above will fit 1961/66. But the parking lights have to be relocated on some, as they are in the grilles 1961/64, in the upper grille panel 1965/66.
1961/63's have different wheelbases than 1964/66's.
