K&N cool air intake

i have a 06 5.4L F150, I installed a K&N cool air intake. Truck was running fine at first, now when i accelerate (to go fast) its making a popping noise (like the air filter is being compressed) and a lot of hesitation from the motor (like the air/fuel ratio is off). so i went to the local Ford Service for oil change and tire rotation and ask the manager about it. He recommended that i install the original intake. his reason was the that the sensors gets dirty and will be burning more gas and that i could damage the engine. Can i add a performance chip to adjust the ratio? or what does everyone recommend?

If you need more info please reply, looking to get this fixed.

Thanks,
ngs

Welcomr to the forum....Dont mean to be a smart a** but you need to put it back like it was.On these new engines, everything is there for a reason.Im not sure what is being effected by the aftermarket mod,but its evident your teuck doesent like it.
You will likely get some responses concerning performance chips.tuners etc. While im an Avid Ford fan,Ive seen too many mods done to vehicles over my lifetime, and their consequences.

tylus has a good reputation on FTE. tylus has a good reputation on FTE.
on that intake, did you unplug the battery for at least 30 minutes prior to driving?

the CAI will flow a little more than the stock setup. And if you don't unplug the battery, the PCM still thinks you have the OEM intake installed and wierd things happen.

If you hadn't, go ahead and try the battery first. Also check that your MAF is clean. you might have gotten it dirty during the isntall.

btw, Welcome to FTE. lots of good people around here

If you do an online search for “air filter test” there is a lot of very good information. IMHO, the CAI units are NOT WORTH THE $$! Unless you are talking about a system that was specifically designed for a specific application there are very little hp/tq gains actually achieved in a street use vehicle and there are very few docs that these mfg’s can produce that actually show an increase in hp/tq in the power-band range of a relatively stock street vehicle.

I would avoid oil impregnated filters. While they have their purpose in off-road applications, Ford/GM/Dodge all have “watch-out” bulletins where the oil has contaminated intake sensors. - they even have a training video for the tech's on this (flatratetech.com) .

If you look at the flow data, WIX HP filters flow 98+% of K&N and have a much smoother flow post filter plus excellent filtering, for a fraction of the price! The OE’s have an excellent air intake system. You can use a WIX OEM HP replacement filter in the OEM plastic manifold box and either remove the plastic tube and replace it with a piece of pipe/hose, etc or remove the tube completely and replace the tube by building an air ram type intake into the air box manifold (where the pipe use to attach)- make sure ti terminates above the fan shroud to avoid water intake or fan induced pulsations.

Big thanks

I'm probably going to replace with original setup, hate to do it because it sounds great in acceleration and looks sharp. Thats when she not snap-crackle-popping. I appreciate all the responses and tips, great stuff. I'm sure I'll be in touch.

OH the engine light came on today, senor is dirty. I guess. Gotta change it, for sure now.

I have ran a K&N cold air intake ever since I bought my truck in 07. Never a problem sounds cools though with cruise set about 80 has a nice whistling sound.

Has anyone tried changing the Mass air flow sensor with one that is larger? If ya haven't try it seems to make my 4.6 real happy.
