universal turn switch problem

My 1963 f100 4x4 needs a turn signal switch. at a car show recently the only one i could find was a universal switch, so i bought it with the seller assuring me that it would fit, the only draw back is that its not original and has to clamped to the column. No big deal, i bought it and was happy.

Today i went to plug it in and ran into a couple problems. The first is the original switch only had 6 wires, the new switch has 7 wires.

The second problem is that the two switches have different colored wires, so i can't just connect red to red and blue to blue etc...

has anyone here installed one? whats the extra wire for, or is this not the right switch? i can post the wiring diagrams if you guys need it, i have the one that the switch comes with and the one that is in the original shop manual.

ps- posted this in the 60's era forum as well. It fits in both categories and hopefully someone in one of the two can help.

thanks in advance.

Get the circuit diagram from the manufacturer or get a probe and figure it out yourself.

If you can post both diagrams that you mentioned, we can figure it out.

Easier way:

Make sure battery is disconnected.

Go to the flasher and unplug the flasher.

Spread the 6 wires apart.

Put a 6V battery on one of the the turn signal bulb wire (eg left side).

Use a Voltmeter to find out which wire is "hot". You got the left side.

Ditto for right side, and you got the right side.

Now work backward from the flasher to the switch.

I do not believe the new switch you just bought is going to serve your needs. It looks like it's made for an older truck that did not originally have turnsignals and dual filament bulbs. I don't like the "stop" lever shown on the side of the unit you bought.

What I would do is go to the auto parts store and buy a trailer tow light box adapter for about $12, and then use a simple on-off-on single pole toggle switch. Mounting the toggle switch will be the hardest part.

The trick to turnsignal switches are their ability to let the stop light function through, as well as the turnsignal function, for the rear lights. The box I am talking about achieves this. The box is really made to take European vehicles and others like Ford explorers that have the separate amber turnsignal bulbs, and combine the red brake lights and the amber turnsignals together so they will operate a trailer that has the American style red only turn/stop combo bulbs.

I used this on my 53 Ford f100, and it works well.

Your wires on your truck are;

left front turn=green/white
right front turn=white/blue

left rear turn/stop=yellow
right rear turn/stop=green

input from flasher=blue
input from stopswitch=red/black
