ok, i have a 91 f250 with a 460 EFI. (the EFI on these motors is the stupidest thing ever...). the motor is kinda tired at 147,000, and im thinkin for a cheap overhaul. what i had in mind was to leave the motor in the truck and drop the bottom end, put new rings on, pop the heads and hone the cylinders a wee bit, tune the heads up a bit with new rockers and some new springs, and up-date the cam. the cam i am looking at is Crower, PN 22171. will this cam work without having to buy new lifters and push rods? will the stock lifting gear work with 1.73:1 rockers? im not trying to make a total hotrod out of this truck, i just want to breathe some new life into my old motor. also, is there a way to up-date the infection- i mean injection system on this thing? i mean, really, stock carbs on stock 460s are getting better power AND mileage!
side note: i spend alot of time on the highway (i put almost 6000 miles on this truck in the first 5 months i owned it.), and it cruses at 2400 rpm.

You never put used lifters on a new cam. You might need a different length push rod with a aftermarket cam & some head work. The only way to know is to check push rod length. I'd remove the engine too.

thanks for the advice. guess that answers that question about the lifters. i want to leave the block in the truck cause i dont have a cherry picker or engine stand, but i do have access to a lift, so i can pull the bottom end. planned on doing a little headwork.
now, im asking for opinions here, is this cam grind a good highway loaded/unloaded grind? keep in mind that i like to go play in the mud every now and then, and am not afraid to lug it down while hunting.

It's awful small as far as performance cams go. It will idle smooth, no lope. Probably a good choice for a stock rebuild. You will have to check lifter preload & push rod length & get the matching springs for it.

The cross member make leaving the motor in the truck worse than renting a cherry picker and buying an engine stand from Harbor Freight. Better yet find a buddy or neighbor that has one or both items. I loan mine out all the time.

That Crower would probably work, but these speed density 460s are picky about cams. I have talked to a few guys who had good luck with the Summit 3500 cam, or you could go the route I did and have a cam custom ground. Search reincarnation-automotive and you'll find a guy who will sell you a custom cam and lifter kit for less than $250. He's done a bunch of FI460s.
One of these days I'll get the cam I bought from him into my truck so I can tell you first hand how it runs...
Oh yeah, Bear is probably dead on about the crossmember. It's right up against the pan, I've got a buddy whos a Ford dealership wrench and he said it's just barely possible to change the pan gasket by unbolting the motor and lifting it.
thanks for the input guys. oldracerguy, that is the (i dont know what word to use)est animation for your avatar, that i have ever seen... lol.

I don't have any experience on the EFI 460s but I can tell you on the 302s and 351s with speed density (no MAF). They often times don't respond well to large cam swaps. This is because the bigger cam will lower the vacuum which will make the truck think it's under load when its really not. If you had a MAF sensor it can directly measure the airflow instead of trying to calculate it (uses vacuum for that). Does that make you like the EFI more? lol. You can do a cam as long as it's not too extreme. I would maybe select one that someone else has already used with EFI. I tried looking at the specs for the one you listed but I could not find it.
