Ford Parts Folk: TSB 05-25-11 Wavy/Warped Front Bumper Cover

The TSB for the 2005-2006 F-250 "Wavy/Warped Front Bumper Cover" condition lists a part number 6C3Z-17C882-A for the correction.

I looked this part number up in Microcat and it's just the plastic honeycomb reinforcement behind the actual bumper cover.

What's different about this reinforcement that eliminates the wavy front bumper cover? Was it redesigned or something? Maybe have some kind of adhesive on it?

Are there any parts folk (or anybody who's did or had this done) that can add some insight?

The new filler panels on top of the bumper are one piece with the honeycomb. It used to be two pieces.

My filler panel is three pieces .... a left, right, & center.

Are you saying they are now all one piece and it fixes the wavy condidtion? Or, do you mean that the "honeycomb" reinforcement and the bumper cover are all molded together now?

The way I was reading it, and based on what Microcat returns the P/N as, it seems to be just the reinforcement. Thus, keeping the "wavy" cover and no painting is involved.

Well ... with no other insight into this "new" part, I think I'm gonna order one and see what comes in.

If it's just the "honeycomb" reinforcement, then great! I won't have to worry about getting something painted. If it's the whole deal, then 'ole well ...

My bumper is off at the moment, so I did take a closer look at the reinforcement and it is wavy itself ... so, it may in fact be the culprit.

I don't understand how that part is three pieces. All the trucks I've seen have a continuous one piece bumper cover, on top of the metal part, between the metal part and the headlights/grille. How is yours three pieces? Do you have any pictures?

Oh, your right ... the "bumper cover" itself is a one piece painted unit.

BUT, immediately behind the "bumper cover" is a three piece plastic "honeycomb" reinforcement panel that provides the stiffness and shape to the "bumper cover"

Going back to my original post ... The TSB for the 2005-2006 F-250 "Wavy/Warped Front Bumper Cover" condition lists a part number 6C3Z-17C882-A for the correction. This P/N is for the "plastic honeycomb reinforcement behind the actual bumper cover". There is no mention of the actual painted bumper cover in the TSB ... this suggests to me that Ford decided it was the reinforcement that was causing the "wavy" condition and not the painted cover.

My question was, what's different about the reinforcement that will eliminate the wavy-ness?

Because it's one piece with the cover now. Just bought this part, actually let me check the part number.....

My part number is different from yours. I suspect that the part has gone through a couple of revisions, ending with a cover that is one piece with the reinforcement. The catalog picture still shows two pieces, but both as part 5. I checked with my local guy and it is still a good available number as a bumper filler. If you put it into the trademotion search it doesn't come up. I have a feeling if it was actually ordered, it would cross to a newer number being 6c3z 17d957 baptm, which is what I just got. I in fact ordered the cover and filler as separate pieces, but just got the one part. Perhaps if you order the cover, you get the one piece assy, if you order just the reinforcement you just get the reinforcement. Hopefully for you it sounds, the filler would be best.

OK ... so maybe all my (and aldridgec's) digging on this issue will help somebody else.

Here's what I found today ... went to the local Ford Dealer and asked for the "6C3Z-17C882-A Wavy Bumper Cover Kit" per TSB # 05-25-11. The Dealer actually had one in stock and brought it out.

It was labeled "6C3Z-17C882-A Wavy Bumper Cover Kit" and had instuctions inside on how to correct the wavy bumper cover. BUT, all it was was the 3-pieces of plastic reinforcement the fits behind the actual cover. So I looked it over real good and read the instuctions ... personally, I did not see anything different about this reinforcement from what I already have on my '06. Nor did I see how Ford expects this to correct the wavy bumper.

Anyway, referencing the MicroCat page below, the callout "@ = 17C882" is what the part number that the TSB refers to. The callout "# = 17D957" is P/N 6C3Z-17D957-BAPTM (what aldridgec mentioned) and it includes both the unfinished cover AND the reinforcement pieces. If anybody's cover is as "wavy" as mine, then you'll need the 17D957 as I personally don't think any reinforcement could correct the defect.

A picture is worth a thousand words! I see what you mean by the three pieces now. And I agree, probably the best solution is the latest version that i have. My buddies 07 is one piece too.

I wonder why the original is three pieces?

That's one of the few diagrams I've seen that shows the newer header with the center support in the right spot.

Energy absorber for 2004/2005 models

Would anyone know where I could find an energy absorber for the 2004 ford f150. Mine has the 2 separate pieces on both sides of the bumper
