What you just experienced is one of the great things about this engine.

How much was your repair?

7 dollars.

I am not going to say all repairs will be that easy or cheap.
But I will say start your repair process with the simple, easy and cheap stuff before you start replacing parts that may not be bad.

460/5 is starting off with a positive reputation.
is it possible to rig up a mechanical deal, such as a pull cable like on a choke, to the fuel shut off? i want to be able to run without electricity, but still shut the truck off at will.

Not with the stock injection pump.
There is a spring in the fuel shut off that will turn the fuel off when no power is applied to the FSS terminal.
Can't remember exactly, but it only needs 9 or 10 volts to open the solenoid.

With some machine shop work, the IP governor cover could be modified and converted to manual on and off, but you would probably have issues with fuel leaks unless you spent more than just a few dollars doing the conversion.
After the conversion, the manual cable would be the only way to start and stop the engine.

i realize it would be the only way, but what i was wondering is if i could take the electronics out of the equation on the fuel shut-off, and make the cable actuate it.

Like I say, anything is possible if you spend enough money to make it happen.

With a few fabricated parts, some machine work and a couple O rings to seal the shaft it could be done.

Something like FSS coil out, shaft and cam fabricated to move the fuel stop lever, then the cover machined for the shaft and O rings, then mount a lever on the outside to hook the cable to.

How much would it cost, probably more than I would be willing pay.
