Anyone ever swap a 292 with a 351 in a 1959 F100? Besides motor mounts, what other issues am I looking at? Thanks.

 

I've put a 460 in my 58F100. So I wouldn't guess you'd have any problems. I'm saying this because I'm not knowledgeable about the 351, but I'm sure it wouldn't physically be any bigger on the outside than the 460. Have you seen any of the advertised aftermarket tubular/crossmember style motor mounts? I like'm. That's what I used on my 460 transplant. What kind of tranny do you have? Or what tranny do you plan on using? Do you have the OEM headers with the 351? Or will you be using aftermarket blockhuggers etc?

I've seen the tubular mounts in sacramento vintage ford's catalog. Any advantage to that vice the more conventional looking mount they also offer? Currently I have a 292 with a top loader 4 speed (I think) installed. looked up the vin and my truck rolled off the floor with a 6 cyl and also it used to be shift on the tree, hardward still under steering wheel. The swap seems pretty straight forward, just would like to hear from someone who's done it.
Did you keep the same suspension in front? Pwr steering/disk brakes? Thats a sharp looking setup you've got goin there. Thanks for the info, Howard

You asked about advantages of the tubular/crossmember like engine mount versus the more traditional? I guess too me, and just me, I like the tubular mount because-at least in my memory-the other mounts don't connect the left and right frame members? Maybe they do? And I like all the extra beefing up the frame that I can get. I'm always like that. Never too many crossmembers in a modified truck. That's my motto. I'm not an engineer or anything-maybe that's why I tend to overbuild stuff-because I'm not an engineer! There may be more oil pan clearance problems or just better planning needed to get things to fit with the crossmember type front engine mounts, but it looks super strong to me. Either is probably fine. Its just me.

And yes I kept the OEM brakes all the way around, and the only front suspension mod was that I went with the SACTO vintage Ford monoleaf front springs. Not the reversed eye mono springs, but the standard eye mono springs. I wanted it lower and tried the reversed eye springs, but there was zero suspension travel even after seriously cutting the OEM rubber frame/spring bumpers down to nothing. I sold those springs to a local guy who understood they were fine for "looks" and cruisin easy, but not functional for general street use. IMO anyway.

I don't have power steering, but I do have the F300? steering column box assembly (can't recall the exact model number-its in the shop book i have too late to go look,) but anyway a bigger truck. And it has more turns lock to lock as a power steering unit would etc so it seems almost like power steering. The previous owner put it in. I think front discs would probably be a good idea, I just didn't do it. ???

Man the truck looks great, I have a 59 and iam in the process of getting a 302 5 speed together to swap the oem 223 out. Iam sure i could ask a book of questions but ill settle with one. How many chevys has that ole ford put in its place?
