Rear end

What is the difference,in a f100 and f250 9 inch from a 60 ford. The rear end I have came from a 60 and when I replaced the ring and Pinion the bearings in the kit where to small and I went back to the parts store and they said I had the heavy duty rear and gave me larger bearings.Where there different rears for the f100 or do I have a f250 rear?

An F-250 rear is a full floating axle with an eight lug wheel, a 9 inch rear is a semi floating axle with a five lug wheel, two completely different rear ends. That said, who knows what has been changed over the years. It is pretty common these days for 3/4 ton trucks to have had half ton axles put under them. Tom

the ford 9" rearend used different bearings for the carrier also depending on application.there are at least two different bearing sizes maybe three depending on if it is a 28 spline or 31 spline axles in there. someone over the years could of swapped out the pumpkin from a different vehicle also which adds more to the confusion as all 9" pumpkins are interchangeable (of course as long as the axles corespond to the pumpkin).

not sure what type of rearend the 3/4 trucks used (either a Dana or Tin=mkin maybe), but i suspect it was probably an integral carrier rearend. the 9" uses a removable carrier so they are easy to recognize the differnence between the two.

1968 f350

I am restoring a 1968 f350 dually flatbed and it is 2wd so I am converting it to 4wd.
it already has a Dana 70 rear 4:10
having hard time finding something that will fit
would it be ok to go with Dana 44?

Hi Evan. Just a heads up, this thread goes back to 2009. And this Forum is the 48-56 Forum. You might be better served in the bumpside 67-72 Forum.
