Spindle bearing lube/ yellow o-ring question

Leaving on a road trip next week, so I'm doing some PMS to the front axle. I want to grease the front spindle bearings but don't want to replace the $70 yellow o-ring ifm I don't have to.
Can I remove the outer hub without having to replace the O-ring?

You have to pull the whole hub assembly to grease that bearing. If you have esof you probably should replace it. Guzzle has a write up on it: Welcome to guzzle's 4x4 Needle Bearing Maintenance Web Page

If it's not damaged, and you can clean everything back to spotless, a coating of grease on everything should allow an old o-ring to seal up again to allow proper ESOF operation.

You're better-off with new, but used can work if everything's clean and lubed.

I did mine Saturday and didn't replace that yellow o-ring. I was told it's only for operation of the ESOF. I don't have it either, thank god!

It also seals out water, so it should at least be in place.

That's also a good reason for the grease.

It was intact and I did grease it but had no access to a new one at the time.

The o-ring is cheap.. about $3 if I remember correctly the last time I bought one. I think you are referring to the hub seal around the axle shaft. That one is reusable if it is not damaged. I would never reinstall the hub without a new yellow o-ring.

Damaged seals would show up as rust and moisture on the needle bearing area and inside the hub.

Bob,
Do you carry that o-ring or do I have to buy from the dealer? I'm going to grease the non serviceable bearing thru the abs sensor so it won't be much more work to replace the yellow o-ring.

That's the one behind the auto/manual stock locking hubs. The yellow o ring is behind the main hub assembly.

Here's a link to Bobs maintenance page, and shoul shed some light on it for you.

I've had mine apart a number of times and not replaced the big o-rings with new, havn't noticed any sign of them leaking or had ESOF performance issues. I always lube them with some silicone lube before I install them, new or used. That's my experience but YMMV.
