1993 F600 5.9 cummins

hey everyone, just picked up a 93 f600 rack dump with 150,000 miles for my roofing company. searched and searched but cant seem to find too much info on the truck or the motor. Runs beautiful no leaks, cab and chasis also great but its my first diesel and want any help in watching for trouble areas or any info you guys have on the truck and exspecially the motor. besides a sticky throtle it seems to run perfect but I need some knowledge and I know you guys have it! thanks for taking a minute to read my post and thanks for the help

What transmission does it have in it?

The motor should have a plate on it somewhere on the passenger side of the engine (I believe) that has the hp and other info stamped on it.

My work has a '97 F800 with a 160 hp 5.9 12 valve and Allison 4 speed auto.

Regarding the sticky throttle, if its the same pedal setup that we had in Ford school buses chassis of that era, the accelerator pedal is hinged from the floor and dirt would get packed in at its base and prevent engine from coming back to idle. We would regularly have to dig the crud out and blow out the chunks with an air hose.

93' 5.9 industrial should be a mechanical 12 valve engine, 160 hp@ 2500 rpm. Should have a Bosch VE injection pump. There are no glow plugs or screen to help cold weather starting but unless there's a problem they will still start fairly easy in cold weather down to below 10 degrees. Colder than that and a quick shot of ether should be enough to get it going.

Sticky throttle could also be in the linkage or around the injection pump shaft. A little spray lube goes a long way.

great motor just get the serial number and CPL wrote down somewhere if those numbers get lost nobody can identify whats in the motor part wise. just keep good fuel filters on it those pumps cant handle trash in the fuel

I noticed that- ours starts unassisted even when it's like 10 degrees outside- a point at which my truck is difficult to start cold WITH glow plugs. Without, you have to crank it for 30-40 seconds before it will start.

How do those 5.9's start so easy?

cold start solenoid on the fuel pump. find ur ignition wire on the pump should be a jumper wire to the bottom of the pump connecting to the advance. also yours might have a intake heaters check to see if u have a starter solenoid on top of your intake toward the firewall side the newer 5.9 changed to the P pump didn't come with that option, well some low hp did have the ve pumps

The Cummins is a direct injection engine, the 7.3 is an indirect injection engine. DI is a higher compression ratio than IDI, plus there is no separate pre-chamber.

The IDI is 20.5:1 compression, I find it hard to believe the Cummins has a higher CR than that.

93 cummins f-600

guys thanks a million for responding to my "cry for help". With your help and other little bits here and there, I'm learning a little more everyday. I tell you this, besides that throttle thing, that thing runs like a top! Not a leak anywhere and that girl is strong although what I'm guessing is just a ford tramission( six speed) there won't be many speeding tickets. Wish I had a pic so you guys could let me know if I got my moneys worth for $5900.00. Although its only a 93, there's no rust on the cab, the 16 foot rack dump has some rust under on the rails and stuff, but I put plywood down the sides and she pulls 6-7 ton of shingles around like she's empty. Thanks again truly!

I would also have the valves adjusted a good mechanic can do it easily. You need to do that on a 12 valve. Also change the oil regulary that keeps the engine life where its supposed to be.

The biggest problem your going to have is the rotten braking system Ford used on their juice brake trucks.

As for the engine leave the power ratings where they are the engine is over taxed in a medium duty truck.

F600

thanks k. please don't think this is a stupid question of me especially seeing I spent the better part of driving everything from dump trucks to trash trucks to oil tankers but with that motor, basically city driving from roof to roof, what kind of mileage or hours should I be shooting for in oil and filter changes. I'm sure its different than a gas job

I wouldn't go anymore than 3000 miles per oil changes oil is cheap.

You should do fuel filters every 3rd oil change all depending on where you buy fuel from.

F-600/ cummins

Once again K thanks a million for taking the time to help me along with my venture. Even though this is a "forum" most people, I'm sure are looking for help instead of trying to help another. Did the oil when I bought her last week along with the fuel filter. Always been good about those things because like you said, cheap enough. I am really happy how well that truck runs. Left it over night on a five ton shingle job and on the second day she wouldn"t start. Put two new batteries in her. Fixed a couple marker lights and all I can see left is two new steering tires. I'm from Mass. so I'm sure you couldn't tell me about any bargains but for all your other help I am truly grateful.

Look here for valve adjustment, it is really easy to do. This will look a bit different than your engine, but the actual adjustment should be the same.
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/d...d.php?t=143557

I "assume" your engine will also be affected by the KDP or killer dowel pin like the Dodges are. Search for KDP on the above site.

The Cummins is a great engine, and when they are in a Ford you get the best of both worlds.

P.S., I think the engine tag will be on the drivers side of the timing case, front of the engine. It will have your engine SN, CPL, HP ect.
